EMPOWERING OUR COMMUNITIES
On October 7, the STEM Alliance kicked off Digital Inclusion Week 2024 by distributing 75 Chromebooks to support digital access in our community.
Sponsored by AT&T, this initiative provided 25 laptops to the Carver Center for youth from the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) and 20 devices for our Case Management clients.
This collaboration is a vital step toward bridging the digital divide and ensuring that everyone has access to the technology needed for success.

CARVER CENTER'S FARMER'S MARKET DELIGHTS
On Saturday, October 5, Carver Center hosted a Farmer's Market, in partnership with Food Web, an organization that connects food recovery organizations with food pantries to supplement their inventories of fresh fruit and vegetables, and facilitates transport and distribution of the produce.
Food Web was started by seven local high school students: Eliza Goldban, Natalie Goldban, and Sam Goldban (Scarsdale High School); Jake Messafi and Ari Messafi (Blind Brook High School); and Julia Kroin and Teddy Kroin (Rye Country Day School). While volunteering at local pantries, the students became aware of the limited produce options available to pantry clients. They partnered with Sharing Excess, an organization that rescues perfectly edible surplus produce from the Hunts Point Market, and launched this Free Farmers Market Program to distribute the produce.
781 registered Carver Market individuals visited the Farmer's Market, and a total of 6,944 pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables was distributed in two hours!

EDUCATING OUR TEENS
Mercy University, in partnership with ACT-SO hosted a STEP Workshop for 12th graders. The session provided an overview of the college application process and introduced students to the ACT-SO program and Mercy’s STEP program.
Thank you to Carver friend, Ingraham Taylor, Chairperson of the Westchester Region ACT-SO Coalition, Inc. (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics Coalition), for coordinating this visit with Mercy College.

MIDNIGHT RUN MAKES A DIFFERENCE
A group of of 10 Teen Center members organized a Midnight Run to NYC on October 11. They collected clothing, and hygiene supplies for individuals experiencing homelessness. With compassion and a lot of teamwork, the teens assembled the packages, and then traveled into the city late at night to distribute the items, offer support, and engage in conversations. This experience allowed our teens to gain a deeper understanding of empathy, service, and the impact of giving back to the community.

MAKING BEAUTIFUL MUSIC
Carver Center Teen Center member, and Port Chester High School senior trumpet player, Camilo Mamani, was recently selected for the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) All-State Wind Ensemble. A testament to his dedication and skill, this achievement comes as a result of a highly selective process against top student musicians across New York state. Out of approximately 6,500 students evaluated for All-State, Camilo ranked among the top scorers receiving 100 on his audition. In December, Camilo will travel to the All-State Conference at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester. He will join a distinguished group of musicians and have the chance to perform with renowned conductors.
