A Year of Measured Progress and Real Results in Middle Township
As we look back on 2025, I am proud of the steady, practical progress Middle Township made across every core responsibility of local government. This was not a year of headline-chasing projects or risky spending. Instead, it was a year defined by responsible budgeting, visible infrastructure improvements, strengthened public safety, and thoughtful planning for the future. This is what residents deserve from their municipal government.
The Township’s 2025 municipal budget reflected our continued commitment to fiscal discipline while protecting essential services. Our mission is to provide excellent municipal services at the lowest cost possible to our property owners. We prioritized public safety, public works, and infrastructure maintenance while carefully managing operating costs in an environment where inflation and outside cost pressures remain very real.
By focusing on necessities and long-term value, Township Committee was able to maintain service levels, fund capital needs, and continue investments without placing unnecessary burdens on our taxpayers. Budget decisions in 2025 were guided by the same principle we apply every year: Middle Township should live within its means and plan intelligently.
In addition to Township-led projects, Middle Township coordinated closely with utility providers and regional partners on larger infrastructure work, including the current South Jersey Gas pipeline project along Route 9. While utility projects are not Township-initiated, our role in traffic coordination, public communication, and safety oversight helps minimize disruption for residents and businesses.
These efforts reflect an important reality: good infrastructure management includes not only what the Township builds, but how we manage outside projects that affect daily life.
Middle Township continued to benefit in 2025 from county and regional open space investments, helping preserve land, improve recreational access, and enhance quality of life. Township officials worked in coordination with Cape May County Open Space Board to ensure Middle Township projects, like the major improvements underway at the Goshen Sports Complex, are well planned, professionally coordinated, prudently funded and responsibly maintained.
At the local level, we focus on parks and recreation maintenance, town-wide facility upgrades and budget-friendly improvements that keep community spaces safe and user-friendly. While these improvements are often incremental, they are essential to preserving public assets, supporting municipal services, enhancing family recreation and upgrading community gathering spaces.
Affordable housing remained a significant policy focus in 2025. Middle Township advanced its state-mandated affordable housing plan, taking proactive steps to meet legal obligations while preserving the Township’s character and infrastructure capacity.
Township Committee took thoughtful steps to address our affordable housing obligations through sound planning, fairly negotiated compliance, and a focus on local needs driven by public input. This approach provides certainty for responsible developers, protects the Township from unnecessary litigation costs, and ensures growth is managed responsibly.
Public safety investments continued in 2025 with an emphasis on both personnel and preparedness. One of the most important actions taken by the Township Committee was approving a long-term labor agreement with PBA Local 59, extending through 2030. This agreement provides stability for the Police Department, supports recruitment and retention, and ensures consistent service for residents.
Beyond contracts, the Township continued to support public safety focused on training, equipment readiness and coordination with county and regional emergency partners. Recruiting excellent officers, emergency preparedness, technological upgrades, traffic safety, interagency cooperation and our continuing commitment to community policing were ongoing priorities throughout the year.
Middle Township’s newsletters throughout 2025 highlighted something just as important as capital projects: our amazing Middle Township Team. The Township continued its Employee of the Month and Employee of the Year recognitions, honoring staff members whose dedication keeps Township operations running smoothly.
Community events, civic programs, and local recognition were also a consistent focus. From our traditional seasonal events to the celebration of new projects, like our Hometown Heroes Program, we have honored hard working volunteers and generous local organizations. The Township continues to celebrate the people and groups that make our hometown such a wonderful place to live and raise our families.
What tied all of 2025 together was a focus on planning. Whether it was capital budgeting, road work scheduling, housing compliance, or shared-services discussions, the Township Committee worked to position Middle Township for smart growth and sound development. Not just for this year but looking ahead to five and ten years from now.
Good local government is not about doing everything at once or trying to please all the people, all the time. It is about listening, then setting priorities, avoiding unnecessary risk and making steady, affordable progress.
Along with Deputy Mayor Gandy and Committeeman Jim Norris, I am grateful to our Administrator Kim Osmundsen, our skilled professionals, dedicated department heads and our hard working municipal employees, volunteer boards and especially our engaged residents. The accomplishments of 2025 were not accidental—they were the result of teamwork, professionalism, and a shared commitment to doing things the right way.
We enter 2026 with strong financial fundamentals, clear and sensible priorities, and the confidence that comes from several years of consistently responsible governance. Middle Township remains a community that plans carefully, invests wisely, and puts our residents first.
It is an honor to serve as your Mayor.
