Sew in the Know Newsletter!

Did you know that today is "International Day of Absurdity" (lol) and on that note - it is also the birthdate of Leonard Jimmie Savage (1917-1971) a Mathematician who was considered a genius.....

I always wondered what I learned all that math for in school - but math has been the most helpful in quilting! For those of us though that do not want to waste precious time figuring out the dimensions of a HST (Half Square Triangle) - there is a great tutorial page with all the sizes on my web site. You can see them here. There are several versions and charts to show you a few shortcuts OR you can sharpen your pencil and work out the numbers! (Hint - a²+b² = c²)

I'll cover some other time saving tips in this newsletter - so read on. I also have a pattern for a simple table runner using (you guessed it) HSTs.

I'm headed out tomorrow for more pick ups and deliveries - so if you have something ready to go - let me know. I have room for a few more quilts and can save you a spot if you book in now.

In other news, I just finished making quilted fabric for placemats and table runners for a customer.

We used her fabric for the front and a fabric I have in stock from the "Far and wide" collection that looked like snow. Quilting two beautiful fabrics together can really up your home decor game!

I do have this full line (and a couple more) at $15 a meter and will be making a new quilt and kits to match for spring.

I only have a few special offer quilt kits left (listed below) - they make fast and easy gift quilts - so check them out.

Finally, below - I will show you how I can help you pick out a wideback from what I have in stock. (Remember, I have over 20 good quality widebacks in stock. They are such nice quality that I also used a couple of them in quilt tops!)

I must go... the woods and Katie (the new pup) are calling - as are a few quilts left to finish in my studio!

As I have said before and will say again......keep on quilting!

HST Christmas Table Runner

I recently quilted this table runner - that Karen beautifully created and realized it ia ALL HSTs.

If you use one of the finished HST quick methods I have here on the web site - you can have this put together in less than an hour!

I put together a pattern for this runner - so email me and I will send it to you. (There is no charge). I added four matching placemats to the pattern.

This makes a great gift and you can quilt it yourself - or send it to me for some more fancy quilting!

The finishing Touch

I know I keep harping on using widebacks - but there are some good reasons! Widebacks not only save you time (no piecing of backings) but they can also be economical. When you use a quilting cotton for a 60 x 74 quilt you would need 3.4 meters for the backing - and have to piece it. This could cost as much as $70 plus tax for your backing. When you use a wideback you would only need 1.7 meters and the cost would range would be $50 - $58.

Save time and money!

Don't know what backing to choose? Here is how I can help!

A customer recently sent me a photo of her quilt.... and I love the colours. I was able to super-impose a photo of a backing I have in stock on top of her quilt image. This way she could see how the colours could work.

You can see the widebacks I have in stock here.

Other finishing options

One of the benefits to becoming a PDQ member is that I will cut your leftover scraps from your backing into 2 1/2 inch strips at no charge. All the quilts I quilt will be returned to you fully trimmed with squared corners. (yes you get all your scraps back too!)

Other finishing options I offer to everyone is to attach your binding so that when you get the quilt back you can start hand sewing your binding right away! The pricing chart is here.

I can also machine stitch your binding on (oh horrors!) and create beautiful labels.
