Sew in the Know Newsletter!

There is a lot of news this month!

I have had several calls and emails asking if everything is ok.....

In fact things are great and I have been very busy with life in general.

I am feeling a little behind but getting caught up so no worries - if I have your projects I am likely delivering them in the next week!

So yes - there is NEWS! We got married! And we have a new puppy! Was it a shotgun wedding? (lol)

As many know - my life partner has been the best surprise that has ever happened in my life - and we have waited until it was just right to get married. We did make the decision kind of last minute - but that added to the fun!

So I left my quilting alone for a week and just celebrated life. During that time we had Thanksgiving and then because we did not have quite enough excitement - we got a new puppy - Katie! More on Katie later....

Thank you to everyone who wished (and wishes) us well and thank you for your patience. It was a spontaneous event that up-ended my predictable schedule a bit!

On the 19th of October I also taught for the Region of York Quilter's Guild where there were 20 great women who attended. I presented a new "No waste Quick Finish" quilt option that I have pictured below. It's a gorgeous quilt and I have a few quilts kits left. They are quick finish so are great for making that last minute gift!

My sit and sew for October was a lot of fun and I designed a new fall table runner pattern you can also read more about below.

Remember also that I have over 20 good quality widebacks in stock and will be adding a couple more this week.

I will also do my best to give you access to some fabulous quilting cotton by Moda at $15 a meter. I think you will love these - so standby!

Finally, I am currently at a Quilt Retreat (my first ever) at Killbear Provincial Park. I have learned another great time saving trick that I will pass along below too.

So much to tell you - soooo little time....

As I have said before and will say again......keep on quilting!

Falling for Fall..

Fall is my favourite time of year. I cannot say enough about the colours and every year I wonder how I can capture all those warm apple cider smells and the riot of colours in a quilt.

I was able to get out for walk today at Killbear Provincial Park and the leaves were still lingering on the trees and walkways. I picked up a few just for the sake of seeing the different colours - trying to plant them into my brain so I could remember them. They were so rich looking.

They really do resemble the fabrics I put in the kits I made for one of my customers - a new quilter who wanted to make some table runners for christmas gifts.

Here is a picture of the (almost) finished table runner.

It has not yet been quilted or bound - but it will be lovely when it is completed.

I have the pattern available to members at no cost - so email me and I will send you the digital copy! Email me here

I also have two kits left. The kit includes everything you need for the table runner top and binding for $35.

Email me here if you would like to purchase one. (kit $35.00)

AANNNNDDDD....... watch your email as I have 2 new runners and placemats I have designed that are quick hostess gifts! Coming SOON!

Fabric Savers

Sherry - a fellow quilter told me about saving all the little scraps she calls "crumbs" and making them into quilt squares. I had heard about crazy quilts - but not crumb quilts! Jenny Doan has a video - as do many others about crumb quilting - where no scrap is too small.

You can read more about crumb quilting simply by searching the internet - or watch this video with Jenny Doan about Crumb Quilting.

Another great time saving tip for saving fabric I learned today is ingenious!

I watched as a quilter next to me created 'flying geese" by using the stitich and flip method. Unfortunately there is a lot of waste when you cut off the half triangle you do not use. And when fabrics are as costly as they are - it breaks my heart to throw any away - but who has the time to repurpose those scraps? But Diane had a great idea for me.......

When she sews across at a 90 degree angle - she sews a second line about 1/4 of an inch away. She then cuts between the sewn lines and voila! Her scraps become a half square triangle scrap. As you can see in the photos below - even while working on one quilt you can be using your scraps to create another quilt or a pillow!

Sew two lines 1/4 inch apart

Flip your block open

Trim between the two lines

Flip your second block open - you now have your main block and a scrappy HST

Your main block looks like this

There are often several stitch and flip squares in some quilts. Using the secondary scrappy HSTs and putting them together makes quick use of scraps. Use the block in a scrap quilt or use it as part of a pillow block!

Variations on a theme!

The Canadiana Fireside Pattern and kit has been very popular and I have a few left. They make great quilts for the cottage or family room or as "Quilts of Valour".

I recently ordered the 3 SIsters Vintage Linens Line and have it in stock to make quilt kits. Using the same "No Waste - Quick Finish" pattern, I used the lights and darks to make this gorgeous neutral quilt with a white fireside backing.

The picture does not do it justice and within 10 minutes of workshop attendees seeing the quilt I sold 5 kits!

This is a 6 hour quilt - no joke! I call the layout the "Pinwheel Star".

It is the same pattern only with a different layout. It just goes to show you what changing colours and turning blocks can do to make an entirely different quilt.

This quilt will make a beautiful gift. If you would like a kit - I have 4 left. (58" x 70" ) Email me to ask for one and I will set it aside and deliver it to you! $90.00

Swimming Upstream....

I was in a business course many moons ago and there was a coach there who was listening to a dilemma that I had. He paused and listened intently, and then waited until I stopped and calmly asked me "Why do you keep swimming upstream?"

My first thought was - "well there is a right way to do things". And that may be true if you are a surgeon or dentist. Or a Judge.
