Beach Restoration After Idalia

1st Ave - 9th Ave

WOW

As you all have seen from endless photos from our residents and visitors alike, our beautiful beach south of Paradise Grille is being restored and replanted. This project has been quite an amazing task, as hundreds of trucks tirelessly brought in the sand everyday for weeks along with all the heavy machinery to spread it around, then all the planting, absolutely incredible!

How it works: (from the Tampa Bay Times, Jack Evans)

"The typical renourishment work done every several years by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers — which is now on hold amid a dispute between the county and the Corps — involves dredging sand from offshore and pumping it onto the beaches. But Pinellas’ dune restoration process is different: In this case, the sand comes in dump trucks from central Florida, with as many as 200 loads per day dropped at the beach, said Kelli Hammer Levy, the county’s public works director.

Another set of dump trucks moves the sand into a long pile along the edge of the beach. Then more heavy machinery shapes the dune into its designed height and grade. Once that’s done, planters seed the dunes with drought-tolerant plants. Levy said the planting contractor monitors each beach for 90 days afterward to make sure that 90% of the plants survive.

The county’s last step is installing new signs reminding beachgoers to keep off the dunes."

Speaking of which...

We thank you in advance for staying off the fragile dunes and allow all this hard work to come to fruition, we appreciate all of you!

A New Bell for Our

Nightly Sunset Tradition

A new Sunset Bell was placed at Paradise Grille. Jim LeBlanc, the Head Bell Keeper pictured here with some of his crew, installed the new sunset bell recently, and WOW, what an amazing sound! Every night at Sunset, the bell is rung by volunteers, don't worry the head bell keeper gives instructions on how to 'ding dong' ... such a memorable event! As a bonus, the bell-ringers (aka campanologist) scribe into 'the book' their name(s) and the reasons for ringing that bell. Then, this book gets bound and put into the Beaches Historical Museum on 9th Avenue where you will be able to visit for years to come - amazing! Volunteer Request Here and I will pass the information onto our head bell keeper, Jim LeBlanc.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
