Camp Timbers Summer 2020 Programs Put on Hold
|
Dear Campers, Parents, and Friends of Camp:
First, I hope you and your family are safe, healthy, and well during these challenging times. At this time, we have made the difficult, but clear, decision to cancel our summer camp programs for 2020. Impacted campers have received an email regarding refund options. All camp programming and events prior to August 1, 2020 are cancelled.
Sincerely,
Brian Miller
Camp Director

YMCA Partners with Emmaus House of Saginaw
|
Emmaus House staff and guests are entering an exciting time supported by the Saginaw YMCA. We have discovered a common theme in our mission statements and in our goals: we both support a community, enabling initiatives to come to life, strengthening our communities, and supporting our Emmaus community of women as they walk the road together to new lives and lasting change.
The "Y" under the leadership,of President & CEO, Steve Meyer, and the implementation by Director of Marketing & Membership, Doug Temple, have enabled our guests to experience all the Y has to offer through subsidized memberships, a gift our women could not afford. We are excited and ready to take classes in Yoga, swimming, and spinning, and we look forward to lunch and learn sessions for nutritional and healthy living practices.
Emmaus House of Saginaw serves women who have been in jail, prison, or rehabilitation programs, providing women with a Christian atmosphere while they create new lives for themselves. We were founded in 1987 by Sr. Marietta Fritz & Sr. Shirley Orand. These two resilient nuns began this ministry of housing women in an old Convent and Rectory, Holy Rosary, obtained for one dollar from the Saginaw Catholic Diocese. They had space for six women. Since then, we have served over 3,000 guests. We are holistic in our approach, providing for physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Their stay is temporary, lasting until they can live independently; however, no one is ever "pushed out the door."
"We are very grateful that Doug and the YMCA believe in second chances. Our guests are very excited to return to the Y upon its reopening. During the pool orientation, one guest smiled and said, 'I used to swim a lot.' We are grateful." - Donna Clarke, Executive Director.

Members Find Love and Competition on Racquetball Court
|
Mitch Larson joined the YMCA in the 80's as a place to participate in sports. For his kids they Y became a place for daycare, swimming, and youth sports camps. Lisa Heidrich joined in the early 90's when she received a free class pass. That's also when she became involved in racquetball, and joined a Y league, and met "dream boat" Mitch Larson. Both continued to use the Y and get involved in all the Y had to offer (weights, basketball, volleyball, running club, classes, cardio machines). Together they continued to compete throughout the next 12 years and eventually planned their marriage on July 21, 2018. Together they have made many close connections with Y staff, other Y members, and enjoy socializing within and outside of the Y.
During the "Stay at Home" order, both miss the social interaction with all the people we meet at the Y. They can work out at home, but it's not the same as being around friends and trash talking with them between sets or during class. Their daily routine is messed up but they have continued to compete at home playing yard games, street pickle ball, walking, and splitting wood.
"We are definitely ready to get back to our friends, workouts and routine that we have been missing".
Mitch and Lisa - YMCA of Saginaw Members
