Protecting CalHome protects families for generations.

National Fair Housing Month marks the passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968 — a law that prohibits discrimination and helps open doors to equitable homeownership. At Habitat LA, we believe that access to inclusive and affordable homes is the foundation for opportunity. 

CalHome — the only state program dedicated to building affordable homes in California — has been vital to our work and is now at risk of losing all funding. Since 2005, CalHome has provided Habitat LA with significant financial support for developments including Millennium Homes, Erin Grove, and Isabel Villas.

As state leaders finalize the 2026-27 budget, CalHome currently has NO FUNDING allocated. 

Without renewed funding, down payment assistance and projects across the state could stall — including shovel-ready developments, critical home repairs, and disaster recovery efforts. The risk is immediate, and the impact is long-lasting: fewer families will have access to the stability and opportunity that a home provides. 

We're urging the Governor and state leaders to allocate $500 million to CalHome — and it takes less than a minute to make your voice heard.

This National Volunteer Month, we’re proudly celebrating our incredible volunteers who show up and put in the work — whether at build sites, in ReStores, or behind the scenes on planning committees.  

On April 30^th, we look forward to welcoming volunteers and guests to our annual Volunteer Appreciation Event for an evening of music, great food, and connection. From door prizes to a recognition ceremony, the night will be a chance to connect with one another and reflect on the progress we’ve made together.

Earth Day: Sustainability in Action 

Less waste. More homes across LA.  

Building a safer tomorrow starts with protecting the one place we all call home: Earth. Habitat for Humanity ReStores are great places to find new and gently used furniture, appliances, and home goods at affordable prices, but they also do so much more. 

Last year, our ReStores kept 11.44 million pounds of usable materials out of landfills — that's over 5,700 tons, roughly the weight of 950 elephants! 🐘 

And this impact directly supports our communities. Every donation and every purchase helps fund affordable housing across greater Los Angeles. Want to help shape a sustainable future and stronger LA? Show your support by donating goods, shopping at our ReStores, or volunteering your time.

Homes Take Shape at Orange

New milestones reached in Long Beach.

Meaningful progress is underway at our Orange Avenue development, located in North Long Beach. This eight-unit, energy-efficient townhome project has reached a key milestone, with 40% of exterior framing complete and overall progress just surpassing 10% completion. 

On site, the crew has been hard at work shaping the structure — framing exterior walls and installing beams for the floor system — in preparation for the next phase of the project. The work is continuing as construction for the second floor and the roof system begins.

Our 9^th annual Raise the Roof wine tasting event, in partnership with the Long Beach Area Faith Coalition, is just around the corner. Join us on Sunday, May 17^th for an enchanting afternoon of wine, music, and fellowship all in support of Habitat LA’s seven-home Palmer Court development in Long Beach. 

This intimate experience includes curated premium wines, tasty food pairings, live music, games, and a dynamic silent auction — all in support of a shared belief: stability and success for families begin with a home.
