RWJUH CLINICIAN OF THE MONTH
TINA VALDEZ, ACNP-BC

Congratulations to Tina Valdez, ACNP-BC, April’s Clinician of the Month.

Tina Valdez is an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in Cardiology who has been on RWJUH’ss medical staff since 2019. Tina completed both her BSN and MSN at Seton Hall University.

Valdez aspired to become a doctor at a young age, but it was her mother’s career as a nurse that encouraged her to follow in her mother’s footsteps.

“When I look back, I’m grateful I chose to be in the nursing profession because I believe it aligns with my personal philosophies and is more of who I am,” said Valdez. “Treat everyone as if they were your own family members seeking care.”

Valdez says she admires her parents for instilling a strong work ethic in her and her siblings. “Things- whether they are material or not, aren’t just handed to you. You need to work hard to get to where you want to be,” said Valdez.

Her favorite quote is, “It’s the one thing you can control. You are responsible for how people remember you—or don’t. So don’t take it lightly,” by Kobe Bryant.

Valdez stated that it is important to have adequate experience as an RN before you decide to become an APN. The experience she gained as an RN made her the APN she is today.

According to Valdez, it’s essential to have empathy, patience, and autonomy in this field, while also developing critical care thinking skills and learning basics about patient care. She says it also helps to build communication skills with other colleagues.

“You build relationships with patients early on and are there for them at their most vulnerable times. To know they’re doing well when they’re out of the hospital leaves me feeling grateful that I am able to be a part of that process for them,” said Valdez.
City of New Brunswick Construction and Road Closure Updates

The city of New Brunswick has notified us of several improvement projects underway that directly impact vehicle and foot traffic on the RWJUH and CINJ campuses. Safety is our topmost priority; we ask team members to avoid construction areas whenever possible and to remain aware of their surroundings. Take caution when maneuvering past construction areas.

Construction Look Ahead Week of April 19 - 22
Division & Hardenbergh Street: Expect up to four deliveries of structural steel each day. The streets are not expected to be closed. Police will direct traffic; residents will have access to their homes.
Hardenbergh Street: Water line installation may continue - notice will be provided to any property that may be affected by a brief interruption of water service due to the ongoing work.

ACTION REQUIRED: RWJBarnabas Health Cisco Duo 2FA Enrollment
Situation
RWJBarnabas Health is transitioning our 2-factor authentication (2FA) solution for secure login to the RWJBH network and applications from our current Symantec VIP to Cisco Duo. All users will receive an email from Cisco Duo (from [email protected]) to enroll in the new system prior to go-live. The email is not spam and requires immediate action.

Background
Symantec VIP is approaching end of life, and we have selected Cisco Duo as the preferred 2FA solution, as it is a more secure user-friendly solution to log into your application(s).

Assessment
2FA is the industry standard for strengthening access security by requiring two methods to verify your identity. For RWJBH, these factors include your user name and password, and a smartphone app for authentication

Recommendation
In preparation for the transition to Cisco Duo, all users will be required to enroll in Cisco Duo, in advance of the go-live.
You will soon receive an enrollment email from Cisco Duo containing links to enroll.
The email will be sent this week (week of April 7)
Subject: RWJBarnabas Health Cisco Duo 2FA Enrollment

When you receive this email, immediate action is required. Risk of not acting will lead to loss of remote access to RWJBH systems.

Step 1: Click the enrollment link in the email to enroll a phone, tablet or other device into Cisco Duo. As part of the enrollment, you will install the Cisco Duo app on your device.

Step 2: DO NOT uninstall your current Symantec VIP 2FA software. Even though you have enrolled, and now have the Cisco Duo app on your device, you will not yet be able to use it for 2FA. You must continue to use Symantec VIP 2FA. You will be notified when you no longer need Symantec VIP and can begin using Cisco Duo.

Step 3: Visit The Bridge at https://thebridge.rwjbh.org/duo for more information.

You must complete enrollment within 30 days from receipt of the email (you will continue to receive emails from Cisco Duo until you have enrolled).

Hearst Grant Supports Purchase of Simulation Mannequin to Train Advanced Practice Providers
The RWJ University Hospital Foundation received a $125,000 grant from the Hearst Foundation to support our Advanced Practice Providers (APP) team’s purchase of a CAE Ultrasound Vimedix simulation mannequin. The simulation mannequin will help our APPs provide critical hands-on cardiac ultrasound training for more than 1,000 APPs working across RWJBarnabas Health (RWJBH). Simulation training has been demonstrated to improve learning skills, performance, critical thinking, self-confidence, and provide learner satisfaction. The purchase of this training equipment is a key first step by RWJUH APPs to provide a consistent, mobile training program for all RWJBH APPs.
