ACTION ALERT!

State Schedules

April 29th Auction

of 160 Acres for Copper World Tailings Dump

Arizona State Land Commissioner Robyn Sahid notified Pima County Friday that the state intends to auction 160 acres requested by Toronto-based Hudbay Minerals on April 29. The state land would connect two separate areas of private land owned by Hudbay south of Corona De Tucson. (Click here to read more about this land sale and the value of this 160-acre parcel to Hudbay.)

Pima County Administrator Jan Lesher sent a letter on Friday to Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs requesting the auction be withdrawn until after Hudbay releases its Final Feasibility Study, expected the middle of this year.

The Living Desert Alliance joins the Save the Scenic Santa Ritas (SSSR) in asking everyone opposed to the Copper World mine to immediately send emails to Governor Hobbs requesting the withdrawal of the auction. See the SSSR sample letter below.

Tanque Verde Creek

Flow Collection

Volunteer Opportunity

The Tanque Verde Creek is flowing! That’s great news. Now, Watershed Management Group needs your help to continue data collection in Tanque Verde Bosque downstream of Wentworth Rd. They are looking for volunteers who live in the area to visit regularly and collect important photo and flow data, ensuring they have a complete data set for this high-priority riparian area.

WMG has been monitoring this creek since 2019 and has found it's an area with increasing seasonal flows, with the potential to flow most of the year. This data helps them advocate for protecting the groundwater and expanding the riparian forest.

Collecting data for Flow365 is easy! With an app and a few instructions, you'll be on your way to collecting this important data. If you're interested in exploring this riparian area on a regular basis, contact Lauren Knight, River Run Network Program Manager today at lknight@watershedmg.org to learn more!
