The Alaska Association of Secondary School Principals (AASSP) is proud to announce our Alaska Principal of the Year for 2023 is Dr. Charles TenBroeck, principal of Hopson Middle School in Utqiagvik, Alaska.
Dr. TenBroeck grew up in Michigan and served in the United State Marine Corps. He was recognized as the 3rd Marine Division "Marine of the Year" in 1993.
Dr. TenBroeck received his Bachelor's degree from Eastern Michigan University, his Master's degree from Marygrove College, and his Doctorate from Liberty University.
Dr. TenBroeck taught for 13 years in Michigan before moving to Alaska to teach at Eben Hopson Middle School in 2014. He became the school's assistant principal in 2017 and has served as principal since 2018.
Brendan Wilson, President of AASSP, said Dr. TenBroeck deserves this recognition. "Dr. TenBroeck has served for five years as principal at Hopson Middle, providing consistent and excellent leadership, which is crucial in all school settings, especially rural Alaska. Congratulations to Dr. Charles TenBroeck on his well-deserved recognition as AASSP's principal of the year."
When it comes to leadership at Hopson Middle School, Dr. TenBroeck believes, "True collective staff efficacy is how we move the needle." He said student success has come from working with a great staff. "The best ideas and strategies are always somewhere in the room." He added, "Allowing teachers and students a voice in decision-making is a fundamentally important component of the school's success."
David Vadiveloo, Superintendent of the North Slope Borough School District, said Dr. TenBroeck has led Hopson Middle School with passion and dedication despite challenges. "He is a high expectation, student-centered leader who is committed to whole student growth through positivity and strength-based instruction." Superintendent Vadiveloo added, "Dr. TenBroeck has a firm belief in the ability of every student to exceed their expectations and encourages his students to extend themselves in every aspect of their life."
Superintendent Vadiveloo said that the North Slope Borough School District celebrates Dr. TenBroeck's recognition. "On behalf of our entire District, we congratulate Dr. TenBroeck and are proud and fortunate to have him as an educational leader. Aarigaa Dr. TenBroeck!"
Department of Education and Early Development Acting Commissioner Heidi Teshner congratulated Dr. TenBroeck saying, "School leadership is essential to meeting the educational needs of students, families, and communities, and Dr. TenBroeck has demonstrated this in his service to ensuring the success of all Hopson Middle School’s staff and students."
Each year, the AASSP State Principal of the Year winners are submitted for consideration to be the NASSP National Principal of the Year. Dr. TenBroeck will travel to Washington, D.C., to represent Alaska this fall for the NASSP Principals Institute.
