🚨Scams That Start on Social Media Are Surging 🚨

The FTC warns that social media is now the top starting point for scams, with losses hitting $2.1 billion in 2025. According to the agency, scammers are using platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp to push fake shopping deals, bogus investment schemes, and romance scams that blend emotional manipulation with financial fraud.

Top scam types:

• Shopping scams: Ads for luxury items at bargain prices often lead to counterfeit or nonexistent products.
• Investment scams: “Guaranteed returns” or “secret trading methods” are bait for fake platforms.
• Romance scams: Nearly 60% of victims said their scam began on social media, where fraudsters build trust before asking for money.

Before buying or investing, search the company name plus “scam” or “complaint.” Limit who can see your posts and never let someone you met online direct your financial decisions.
