Argyle Pinot Noir Rose "Growers Series" 2021
Rose wines are not new.
  • Classic roses have been around since the beginning of winemaking.
  • Squeeze a grape, and the juice is clear, but if it is in contact with the red skins, it picks up color. Short skin contact makes a rose.
  • During the Middle Ages, Bordeaux was violet-colored rosΓ©, which is why the wine picked up the nickname "Claret" (in Latin, claritas means "clarity") and soon became fashionable around France and England.
  • All very early champagnes had a pinkish hue to them because, in those days, workers could not get the Pinot Noir grapes to the press houses quick enough before the red grapes leached color into the juice.
  • Classic growing regions have built reputations for world-class roses, such as Tavel in Southern Rhone and Chinon in the Loire Valley.
  • Most recently, fun in the sun became a perfect partner with rose wine. Any summer resort area in Europe has rose's as the drink of choice to romp in the sun with; the beaches of the Cote d'Azur in Southern France, the Spanish beaches of Mallorca, or even Point Reyes just north of San Francisco name drop some famous ones.
It's almost like everyone in the last ten years is making a rose, including celebrities such as Jon Bon Jovi, Sting, Sarah Jessica Parker, John Legend, and many, many more. According to a recent report by bw166, a global market research firm for alcohol beverages, U.S. rosΓ© sales volume increased by an astounding 1433% from 2010 to 2020, and is forecasted to grow another 70% by 2024. It is overwhelming to walk down any Rose aisle, with so many choices and so little time. It is good that we have a staff of highly trained professional drinkers that can point you in the right direction, but what makes a good rose. I believe it all has to do, as with anything in life, with fundamentals. Where does the wine come from, what are the grapes and who makes them? If you can determine the quality of those fundamentals, you have a bottle of great wine.

Argyle Pinot Noir Rose is an excellent example of good fundamentals that produce exceptional wine. Argyle was founded in 1987 by Oregon pioneer Rollin Soles. The cool climate of Willamette Valley is world-famous for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir production. Argyle's estate program embraces a grower-first philosophy and has long-term contracts that span more than 400 acres. In short, Argyle winery is a relatively small producer that owns and sources only the best grapes from arguable the best region to grow Pinot Noir. That, with their small batch production and hands-on attention to winemaking, make for great wine.
Argyles Pinot Noir Rose "Growers Series" is sourced from two vineyards in the Eola-Amity Hills. Spirit Hill Vineyard sits on top of the Eola-Amity Hills and is shaped like an open bowl, with aspects in every direction. This elevation, in combination with Van Duzer Corridor's gusty winds, has made Spirit Hill Vineyard a very cool climate growing site. Lone Star Vineyard, a low-elevation, the warm site, is a magnet for the two forces crucial for ripening grapes: light and heat. Lone Star catches the day's first rays of the sun, and the rocky soils retain heat at night, crucial in great Pinot Noir
Winemaker Nate Klostermann Notes
100% Pinot Noir grown in the Eola-Amity Hills, this rosΓ© shines with lively red fruit, elegant flowers, and focused length. Picked over five beautiful days in early September, the wine is layered with depth and textural nuance through aging on its gross lees for five months before bottling.

The 2021 growing season started with a mild and drier-than-normal winter. Spring was relatively cool, with minor frosts in early April and a cold snap in May, but fortunately, our vines were unaffected. Rains during bloom in mid-June led to a relatively smaller fruit set. Though a record-breaking heat event at the end of June had us concerned, the vines prevailed and came out unscathed. While July and August were warm and dry, cool nighttime temperatures ensured ideal balanced ripening. Our 2021 harvest began at Lone Star Vineyard on September 7th with our first pick of Chardonnay and concluded at Lone Star Vineyard with our final Riesling pick on October 12th.
A Word on Rose Accolades
Because Rose wines as a category are rushed to market to keep their fresh fruit, very few get accolades. If they do, it is after the wine has been sold. Here are the 2019 Accolades, the last vintage offered.

Pretty and perfumed, with a scent of cherry blossoms, and flavors of red cherry and watermelon rind, the wine's texture is creamy and succulent, lined with a nutty lees note. Pour it for a salmon feast. Best Buy Wine & Spirits 90 pts

Sourced from the Knudsen and Spirit Hill vineyards, this is a light and pretty coppery pink, scented with orange blossoms and laced with bracing citrus flavors. The strawberry and watermelon fruit falls on the tart side, but the overall impression is that this is a stylish and impeccably fresh rosΓ© that can be chilled and enjoyed with almost any kind of outdoor picnic fare. This Week's Wine Insider Offer
Argyle Grower Series Pinot Noir Rose 2021

Ask Dena. I generally run and hide when the staff taste rose's while she is doing cartwheels. The rose wines that I look for have character and a little weight. This one checked those boxes and was a joy to taste. Bright, vibrant aromas of watermelon and strawberries, weighty in the mouth, great acidity, and a lush finish. The danger with this wine is that you can quickly drink the one and will be looking for moreβ€”a must-have for your adventures in the sun.
