Iyengar Yoga in Kentucky
Judi Rice's Legacy
Judi Rice was the original source of Iyengar Yoga in Kentucky. A native Kentuckian, Judi graduated from Kentucky Southern College and the University of Louisville. Judi made several trips to Pune, India to study at the Iyengar Institute. She taught Yoga at the University of Louisville, as well as in private practice, and directed the Iyengar Yoga teacher training program in Louisville.

Jeanne Kennedy says: Judi was our guiding light. Loving, but firm and full of integrity. Plus, she had fun, fun, fun, a belly laugh, and drew us in with her immense tender love. She was always going back to ahimsa and satya - that was her bedrock.

Alison Ahern says: Judi was a beautiful soul, whose gentle teachings made a powerful impression. Her charming bright smile and delightful sense of humor lit the room and engaged students as she shared her passion for yoga. I came to her as a new student of Iyengar yoga, and also as a new mother struggling with anxiety. She worked generously and patiently with me, giving me tools I will use the rest of my life.

Judi was known for her beautiful writing and impeccable teaching in addition to her ability to have loads of fun. Below is a picture of Judi (with Lou Hoyt) from a yoga retreat in Costa Rica from 2003. Judi is in the center, wearing a hat.
Words from Judi
On Siddhasana: For intermediate students, Siddhasana offers a solid seat for discipline of the senses, concentration and meditation. The broad base of this asana offers stability, space, steadiness, and stillness within the mind. From this stillness one may glimpse a deeper level of inner silence.

Read Judi's column about Siddhasana here.

On Satya (Truth): This week, ask yourself, am I treating everyone as sacred? This is Truth.

Jeanne Kennedy (CIYT Level 2)
Jeanne Kennedy began studying yoga with Judi Rice in 1991 as a student at the University of Louisville. She has been teaching yoga since 2003. She made her first trip to Pune for Geetaji's 60th birthday in 2004. She currently studies primarily with Patrica Walden thanks to Zoom. She has taught yoga to women prisoners in KY for many years.

Sharon Voelker (CIYT)

I am proud to be a life-long Kentuckian residing in Louisville, teaching middle school for 29 years and teaching yoga as a CIYT since 2016. I teach out of my home where I have a small studio. I currently serve on the IYASE board.

I offer classes for Gentle/Beginners and Level 1/2. Many of my students have been with me for more than five years and we always welcome new students. It is a nice, small community of practitioners who are committed to Iyengar Yoga. Anyone is welcome to visit my Louisville suburban โ€œfarmโ€/Yoga shala where in addition to teaching yoga, I raise chickens and work a kitchen garden. Always around, along with my husband, are my fierce ten-year-old German Shepherd and Francis the cat.

Iyengar Yoga in Louisville
a student's perspective
by Amy Vallin
Tell a story about a time your teacher made you laugh.
I really canโ€™t remember when we didnโ€™t laugh in class. Alex has a way with humor, he uses it throughout his teaching. Its one of the things I enjoy the most about our classes.

If a friend asked you why you practice yoga and why they should give it a try, what would you say?
Gaining insight into the connection of mind, body and spirit. Its helped calmed my monkey mind and has given me new perspective on life.
