| | High Schools Celebrate Student Achievement and Character at Annual Assemblies | |
Capital High School and Borah High School recently held their annual academic assemblies, honoring students for their outstanding achievements in academics, leadership, and community service. These events showcased the dedication and hard work of students, faculty, and staff in fostering a culture of excellence within the Boise School District.â
Looking ahead, Boise High School will host its "Heart of the Brave" Assembly on May 2, celebrating students who exemplify integrity, perseverance, and community spirit. Timberline High School will also hold its Senior Assembly on May 2, recognizing the achievements of the Class of 2025.â
These assemblies not only acknowledge individual accomplishments but also highlight the collective commitment of Boise's educational community to nurturing future leaders.

On April 11, Capital High School hosted its annual Academic Assembly, a spirited event recognizing the academic accomplishments of studentsâespecially sophomores and juniors. Held in the main gym, the informal ceremony brought together students and staff for a morning of celebration, recognition, and community.
Teachers presented awards and cheered alongside students, highlighting individual and collective successes across a variety of academic areas. The event emphasized the strong connections between students and staff, with plenty of smiles, high-fives, and heartfelt congratulations throughout the morning.
In addition to student honors, the assembly also included a special tribute to retiring staff members. These dedicated educators and support staff were recognized for their years of service, with students and colleagues alike applauding their lasting impact on the Capital High community.

This special event, held on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 honors Borah Lions for their success inside and outside the classroom â recognizing students who excel academically and uphold the values that define our community: respect, dignity, honesty, responsibility, and teamwork.
Families, friends, Borah staff, District leaders, and Boise School Board members gathered to celebrate these incredible students and their achievements. đ

| | North Junior High Students Earn National Recognition in FBI Online Safety Challenge | |
Students in North Junior High Schoolâs 4th and 6th period Fundamentals of Computer Science classes recently claimed 1st place in the FBI Safe Online Surfing Challenge for February 2025, earning national recognition for their outstanding performance in promoting online safety.
The challenge, hosted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, tests studentsâ knowledge in critical areas such as cyberbullying prevention, scam detection, and responsible digital behavior. North's students proved theyâre more than up to the task.
âEveryone in 4th and 6th period worked really hardâwe earned it,â said student Itxaso Dougherty, reflecting on the team effort behind the win.
To celebrate the achievement, FBI Agent Christopher Sheehan paid a visit to the school to present certificates and talk with students about the importance of cyber awareness.
âItâs important that kids understand online dangersâlike cyberbullying and predators,â Sheehan emphasized. âThese students are setting a great example.â
The victory not only highlights North Junior Highâs commitment to digital citizenship, but also showcases the strong partnership between schools and organizations like the FBI that support student learning beyond the classroom.

More Than a Meal
At Koelsch Elementary, the food service team takes pride in serving free breakfasts and lunches made with local Idaho ingredients. But for kitchen staff like Sergio Oyos, the work goes far beyond food preparation.
âWeâre not just feeding them,â said Oyos, who serves as Koelsch's Food Service Manager. âWeâre helping them get ready for each and every day. Itâs a good start to a successful future.â
Oyos and his team greet nearly 300 students daily, calling them by name and checking in on their wellbeing. His contributions extend into the classroom, tooâhe volunteers with the school's Green Team, helping promote sustainability through recycling efforts. Heart and Hustle at North Junior High
At North Junior High, cafeteria staff are often the first smiling faces students see in the morningâand the ones who help keep them going throughout the day. North Food Service Manager Andrea Pickering leads a team that begins their workday at 6:30 AM, ensuring hundreds of students are served nutritious, well-balanced meals.
âWe work harder than you think,â Pickering said. âWe never stop. Itâs a good, hard jobâand a meaningful one.â
Pickering emphasizes the impact of even the briefest interactions with students: âThat five to eight second moment I have with a studentâI get to create a relationship. I love it.â
North Junior High Principal Pam Dietz agrees. âThey know our kids by name. They greet them every single day with a smile,â she said. âThey provide yummy, meaningful lunches that our kids look forward to. If our kids arenât fed, they wonât learn.â Photo courtesy of KBOI CBS2 Boise.

| | Three Boise School District Teachers Named Finalists for Nationâs Top STEM Teaching Honor | |
Three exceptional educators from the Boise School District have been named Idaho finalists for the prestigious 2025 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST)âthe nationâs highest honor for K-12 STEM teachers.
This yearâs finalists from the Boise School District include:

Vicki Baker, Mathematics Teacher, Timberline High School

Rylee DeVito, Science Teacher, Riverglen Junior High School

Tanya Elmer, Science Teacher, Borah High School
Each was selected for their outstanding classroom instruction, leadership, and commitment to student achievement in STEM education.
âThese educators are among the very best in Idaho, and weâre incredibly proud to see their work recognized at the state level,â said Lisa Roberts, Superintendent of the Boise School District. âTheir dedication to inspiring students and preparing them for STEM-related careers makes a lasting impact on our students and our community.â
Administered by the National Science Foundation on behalf of the White House, the PAEMST program honors educators who demonstrate deep content knowledge and innovative teaching practices. Finalists submitted comprehensive applications, including video lessons, to be considered for the national award.
If selected as national awardees, Baker, DeVito, and Elmer will receive:
- A $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation
- A certificate signed by the President of the United States
- An all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for recognition events and professional development opportunities
National winners will be announced this summer by the White House.
The Boise School District congratulates these dedicated teachers on their well-deserved recognition and thanks them for advancing excellence in STEM education.

| Boise School Board Hears Sustainability Update |
On April 14, 2025, Sustainability Supervisor Ali Ward presented a progress update to the Boise School Board, highlighting major strides in environmental responsibility across the District.
Key highlights:
- Improved energy efficiency in 80+ buildings across 52 schools (4.6 million sq. ft.).
- Efforts to reduce waste, increase waste diversion, and conserve water on 850 acres of grounds.
- 52 student Green Teams and 592 Green Ambassadors led initiatives in waste reduction, energy savings, stewardship, and water conservationâcontributing over 16,800 service hours this school year.
- 42 schools now participate in milk bottle recycling and Orange Bag plastic film collection (up from 14 last year).
- 1,353 MWh saved through Power Down Challenges in the last two years.
The Board applauded these efforts as key to building a healthier, more sustainable future.

The Boise School District is proud to recognize Denim Day on Tuesday, April 30, as a powerful symbol of support for survivors of sexual violence and a unified stand against harmful myths surrounding consent.
Students, staff, and community members are encouraged to wear denim as a visible statement of solidarity, awareness, and education. Denim Day began as a global movement in response to a court ruling that perpetuated misconceptions about sexual assaultâreminding us all that clothing never equals consent.

Mark your calendars for an unforgettable night of music as the West Junior High and Borah High School jazz bands take the stage during Boise Music Weekâs celebrated âAll Thatâs Jazz!â event, happening Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at 7:00 PM at the South Junior High Auditorium, 3101 W. Cassia St.. This yearâs program, titled âUnder the Influence,â promises an inspiring evening of live jazzâfree and open to the public.
Directed by longtime Boise School District music educator Michael Rosenthal, the West Junior High Jazz Band will kick off the night. Rosenthal, widely respected for his dedication to student growth and musical excellence, has left a lasting impact on the Boise music scene. Many of his students go on to continue their musical journeys in high school and beyond.
Theyâll be followed by the Borah High School Jazz Band under the direction of Matthew Clay, who continues the tradition of excellence with dynamic student performances. Together, these two bands showcase the strength of Boise School Districtâs music programs and the incredible talent of our local youth.
Capping off the evening will be a performance by the Van Paepeghem Jazz Band, a popular local ensemble made up of professional musiciansâmany of whom, like Rosenthal, are current or former educators. Their appearance is a highlight for jazz lovers and a chance to see professional-level performance up close.
Part of the cityâs musical fabric since 1919, Boise Music Week is a 100% volunteer-driven celebration of Boiseâs vibrant arts scene. From theater to organ recitals, and from childrenâs events to Broadway-level productions, all Boise Music Week performances are completely free of chargeâa gift from the community to the community.
