Life & Soul Workshop: End-of-Life Planning

Tuesday, September 15 at 2:30 PM

Grand Street Branch Program Room

Most of us know we should get our affairs in order and have the conversation with the people we love. Most of us also keep finding reasons not to. A First Date with Death is a warm, thoughtfully designed program that makes space for exactly that conversation, the one about end-of-life wishes that feels heavy and awkward until you're actually in the room with other people doing it together. No pressure, no commitment, just a surprisingly meaningful couple of hours that will leave you a little more prepared and a little braver than when you walked in.

Registration is required.

Staff Picks

Just Watch Me

by Lior Torenberg

Dell Danvers is broke, in pain, and running out of time to save her sister's life. Her solution: go live.

What starts as a desperate 24-hour fundraising stream becomes something far more complicated as Dell discovers she has a genuine talent for holding an audience, a dangerous appetite for ever-hotter peppers, and a past she has been very carefully keeping off camera.

Lior Torenberg's debut is razor-sharp, darkly funny, and unexpectedly moving, a tragicomedy about grief and redemption that also happens to be one of the most perceptive portraits of internet culture you will read this year.

For fans of Fleabag who like their protagonists charismatic, messy, and impossible to look away from.

Eliza, from Scratch

by Sophia Lee

Eliza Park had her senior year perfectly planned, and then a scheduling mishap dropped her into Culinary Arts with zero kitchen skills and one very aggravating competitor standing between her and the top of the class.

Sophia Lee serves up a warm, funny, and genuinely swoony romance that layers Korean family recipes, a high-stakes cooking contest, and the slow, delicious unraveling of everything Eliza thought she knew about success and herself. Wesley Ruengsomboon is exactly the kind of love interest who gets under your skin before you realize what is happening, and this is exactly the kind of book you will want to read in one sitting.

Scarecited on the First Day of School

by Alliah L. Agostini

Scared and excited at the same time? That is just scarecited, and Afua knows exactly what that feels like.

This charming picture book gives young readers the gift of a word for something they have almost certainly felt but never been able to name, that big, swirling mix of nerves and anticipation that comes with every new beginning.

A perfect back-to-school read for little ones who are feeling all the feelings at once and need to know that is perfectly okay.
