Beaulieu Vineyard Georges de Latour 2019

When a wine receives a 100-point award from a wine critic, it is a worthwhile event to sit up and take note of. To say that a wine is perfect, without a hint of a flaw that many will want to add to their wine collection, only happens once in a blue moon. (If you didn’t know, a blue moon means a second full moon during a month’s time. It is very rare.) Rarer yet is for a wine to have enough inventory to offer it in an e-mail offer. And because this e-mail’s pricing doesn’t make it into Wine-Searcher, it is much lower than the lowest advertised price.

Beaulieu Vineyards, founded in 1900, was named by George de Latour’s wife, Fernande. As the story goes, the Latours, originally from France, were traveling in the hills of Napa when Fernande first saw the land to become the Rutherford vineyard and exclaimed “beau lieu” or “beautiful place. So, George sold his prosperous cream of tartar business (scraping off potassium tartrate crystals from the inside of wine barrels) and bought this beautiful four-acre ranch for $12,000, and Beaulieu Vineyards was born.

Because George Latour knew very little about winemaking or vineyard management, he hired famed enologist André Tchelistcheff to come to Rutherford to establish the estate. When André Tchelistcheff joined Beaulieu Vineyard in 1938, he tasted the Latour family’s private wine from the 1936 vintage. This Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine was so distinctive that Tchelistcheff insisted it was bottled and sold as the winery’s flagship offering. In 1940, Beaulieu Vineyard released the first vintage of Private Reserve. Andre was instrumental in Napa’s history with his 35-year run as winemaker at Beaulieu. He mentored many of the next generations of Napa winemakers, including Robert Mondavi, Mike Grgich, and Joe Heitz. Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has become the benchmark of Napa Valley Cabernet as one of the most collected American wines on the planet and is considered America’s first “cult” wine.

BV’s Chief winemaker Trevor Durling remembers, “Early in my winemaking career, I recall trying the 1968 Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon with a family friend. It not only left an indelible impression on me, but it shaped the path of my career and the wines I wanted to create.” Before Beaulieu, Trevor worked at wineries Sonoma-Cutrer, Gloria Ferrer, Provenance Vineyards, and Hewitt Vineyard. He was an integral part of Hewitt Vineyard Cab, making the Wine Spectator Top 100 #4 wine in 2013. He joined Beaulieu Vineyards in 2015 as only the fifth head winemaker in their 120-year history.

From the Winery

We hand-selected grapes from the finest Cabernet Sauvignon vines from the western bench of the Rutherford AVA in our iconic BV Ranches No. 1 and No. 2, originally planted by Georges de Latour in the early 1900s. We focused on clonal selections (6, 4, 169, 7, and 8), which yield small berries with the high skin-to-juice ratio needed to make intense, long-lived wines. The fruit was handpicked and optically sorted once it arrived at the winery in order to ensure the highest quality selection. These specifically chosen vines are deeply rooted in the well-draining alluvial fan soils of Rutherford, considered one of the finest regions in the Napa Valley for Cabernet Sauvignon.

James Suckling’s 2022 #1 Wine of 2022

The 2019 Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is truly exemplary of this iconic wine, with a nuanced, exuberant nose that shows dark, ripe, berry fruit aromas of black raspberry, red currant, and black cherry alongside delicate chaparral herb notes of wild lavender, rose, fresh mint, sage, and thyme. Exotic spiced notes from the well-integrated new French oak barrel aging adds caramel, cedar, and clove, all accompanying the plush fruit seamlessly, showcasing the depth, elegance, and balance of this world-renowned Cabernet. Full-bodied with tremendous concentration and power, the broad palate is multilayered with enticing flavors of dark black cherry, red currant, cocoa nib, amaretto, espresso, and graphite. Signature “Rutherford Dust” tannins add a fine cocoa-powder texture with a long lift and persistent finish, while secondary notes of earth, espresso, and pencil shavings add to the complexity and nuance. The mouthwatering palate is supple and fresh, with balanced acidity, demonstrating the classically elegant, luscious, and alluring character this wine is known for. Incredibly drinkable upon release in its youth and highly cellarable for many years to come.

Blend: 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot

Accolades

Wow! The aromas to this are really exceptional, with a tangerine edge to the blackcurrants, graphite, lead pencil, flowers, and wet earth. It changes all the time. So expressive and refined. Full-bodied with great intensity and depth of fruit. The ultra-fine tannins display millions of layers. The texture on the palate is superb and lasts for minutes. This is the new 1974 George de Latour, which was a legend. Real Napa Valley red here. Drinkable now, to understand it, but truly great in five to six years and onwards. Benchmark. Lastly, the Grand Vin 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Georges De Latour Private Reserve is just about pure perfection, and the fact that there are roughly 12,000 cases is incredible. Classis darker fruits (cassis, currants) as well as chocolate, leafy tobacco, and loamy earth all define the bouquet, and this full-bodied, concentrated, powerful, yet also elegant 2019 has the balance and structure to evolve for decades. It should be relatively easy to find this in the market, and you won’t be disappointed. Jeb Dunnuck 99 pts

Another stunning vintage of this classic wine, blended with 9% Petit Verdot, this wine is dark and brooding in black cherry, cassis, and currant, with a rich nose of baking spice. Lengthy and generous in tannin, it shows a backbone of age-worthy structure and complexity with a lasting thread of dark chocolate. Enjoy best from 2029–2039. Wine Enthusiast 97 pts

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour is an infant, but it is shaping up to be a real gem. The 2019 includes 9% Petit Verdot, the highest ever, an approach that works here in giving the wine tremendous aromatic presence and overall depth. A whole range of savory and earthy notes lends complexity to this powerhouse Georges de Latour. The 2019 is impressive, that much is evident. Vinous 97+ pts

While the quality of the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Georges de Latour is indeed excellent, what may be even more impressive is that there are more than 12,000 cases of the stuff. Marked by scents of cherries, dusty earth, dried herbs, and hints of cedar, it’s full-bodied, silky, and complex, with a lingering finish. It doesn’t require much cellaring, but it should drink well for close to two decades. Nicely done. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate 94 pts

Trevor Durling hit another home run with the 2019 Georges de Latour, a brilliant follow-up to his 2017. He selects the fruit from BV1 and BV2, parcels on the western benchlands of Rutherford, first planted by Georges de Latour in the early 1900s. The latest generation of vines produced a silken cabernet in 2019, its firm, grape-skin tannins surrounding ripe purple plum fruit, lasting on that fruit perfume with a sense of restraint and elegance. This is the kind of gracious Cabernet that made the Rutherford Bench famous. Wine & Spirits 94 pts

A dark, winey style with a core of gently steeped black currant and blackberry fruit flavors that tumble around with warm earth, dark licorice, and roasted alder. Gaining nice contrast from a flash of violet, this is tightly focused and bears a dust-tinged structure, signaling the need for a touch of cellaring to stretch out fully. Best from 2024. Fine Wine Offer

BV George Latour Special Reserve Cabernet 2019

We tasted this wine a while back before I knew I would write about it. The wine was brought to us by the BV sales rep with a group of other high-end BV wines preserved with a Coravin System so that they could visit some high-end accounts with these over $100 bottles of wine. I took notes, but not good ones, and the details of the wine have faded into that foggy ether of my memory. I remember loving it, as did Tim G, and I listed seven top wine critics who loved it with better notes. If you are looking for that wow wine for your collection or an incredible gift for a wine lover, this wine is for you. I only have 8 six packs available, so don’t hesitate.

A Quick Word On Ordering

Orders must be done by replying to this email. The reason is that I need to keep control of the inventory in one central spot. Emailing or calling your favorite wine geek at one of our four stores may not get your orders in on time to be counted or processed and this creates a helter-skelter for us to get you the wine. For the same reason, ordering on our online Web Store is linked to our regular price, and this sale price is only offered on the email platform. It is also why it takes me some time to respond due to the deluge of orders that I sometimes get. We haven't reached the efficiency or volume of Amazon yet, and in this post-pandemic environment, simple operations sometimes prove difficult. Thank you in advance for your patience.

How To Place Your Order

Let me know your preferred store for pickup: Attleboro, Norwood, Sturbridge, or Swansea. If you don't state the store, I will assume you are picking up in Sturbridge.

I will confirm your order via email when it is ready for pickup. Please give us at least 48 hours to respond. Stay well, cheers!
