Hubby and I were recently on a train in Italy, and we fell asleep. When we woke up from our nap about 10 minutes after our train was due to arrive, we panicked, thinking we had missed our stop, so we quickly gathered our belongings and left.
It turns out the train was actually running behind, and we got off at one stop too early.
The good news is that because the train was so late, we only had to wait 35 minutes instead of an hour for the next train to take us to our destination. There was even a grocery store near the station (the first one we had seen in Italy), and we could look inside. (If you’re wondering, they look the same there as they do here in the States).
So sometimes, when the unexpected happens, instead of focusing on the negative, turn it into a positive adventure.
In the workplace, unexpected changes can happen on a dime. Successful organizations must be prepared to pivot quickly when faced with unforeseen circumstances. As managers, it's important to:
- Encourage a culture of innovation and problem-solving
- Provide training on change management
- Recognize and reward employees who demonstrate adaptability
