Creating a Sanctuary for Learning

As a result of installing Reverse Osmosis Systems in all our schools, students drink β€œpotable” water. Our first RO was the result of a Rotary Grant, installed at the Maktha School. This event was widely celebrated and the photo above was published in the Rotary International Magazine. After the water goes through the RO system, half the water is potable and the other half is piped to toilets and storage, where it can be used for watering trees and cleaning.

ο»ΏFor those of you with reliable clean water systems, this may not seem important or dramatic. For the faculty and students here, it is life changing!

Water Systems and Toilets in our Schools

Potable Water from Water Pumps

Schools and neighborhoods generally retrieve water from a hand pump, taking turns to fill pails of water for home use. The challenge is that water run off forms puddles and attracts mosquitos which can result in a malaria outbreak. The hand pump shown above was moved outside the school yard wall.

Standard Toilets and Sinks in CF Schools

Non-potable water is pumped to toilets. Our gender-based toilets mean separate facilities for boys and girls. Toilets and water access are essential for girls at puberty age. Without such access, girls will not attend school while menstruating. Squat toilets and hand wash sinks are standard in all the Carnevali Foundation schools.

Securing Hand-Wash Stations

This hand wash sink is locked up at night so that the stainless steel taps cannot be removed. Stainless steel has value and can be resold. Carnevali Foundation custom designed metal hoods for all our schools that lock to avoid theft. Since potable water is scarce, push taps are used to avoid water being left on.

Water for Plants

Hyderabad is a very rocky city and planting anything is difficult. Heavy poles are used to make holes in the ground (shovels won't work). Water harvesting pits are also dug this way. This allows rainwater to reach the water table. With sufficient water, shrubs and trees grow quickly and provide shade during the hot months.

Promoting Female Attendance in our Schools

The typical life of a teenage girl should be thinking about her studies, her friends, and what she wants to be when she grows up. In many schools in India there are no designated women's bathrooms for privacy or sinks with clean running water. Unfortunately, this is a reason many teenage female students withdraw from school.

Carnevali Foundation has been instrumental in creating a "Sanctuary for Learning" for our female students by creating clean and safe private bathroom facilities at all our schools.

This is made possible by all the generous donations from you!
