School Enrollment

To encourage school attendance, the Hyderabad Education Office created a student recruiting program called Badi Bata.

Teachers travel throughout the neighborhood to check if there are new families with school age children. They encourage parents to enroll students and send them to school. Student enrollment changes throughout the year as families move to new locations to find work, or to support other family members in need.

Some new students arrive with no prior school experience, and it is up to dedicated teachers to help them adapt.

Water Shortages

School administrators will make a request from the government to install bore wells or connections to main street pipelines. Given the enormity of need and significant cost, it is not always possible for the government to manage these installations. Committed to WASH standards, and having completed a three-year Rotary International Grant, Carnevali Foundation has installed bore wells, water harvesting pits and pipelines to toilets and to city water/waste systems. Our schools have reverse osmosis systems to purify the water to make it potable. If there is still a shortage, then schools will purchase water. Hot summer months are very challenging due to the lack of water.

Computer Lab at Maktha

Students in grades 8, 9 and 10 attend computer classes at Maktha School. Goldman Sachs donated the computers, the teacher salaries and the furnishings to enable students to have lessons in operating systems and practical applications to augment their core academic lessons.

We are pleased that this year the academic performance, as evidenced in state exams, has significantly increased at Maktha. The lab is a very popular class for all the students, and we think that the computer lab has inspired them to think more seriously about advanced education.

Shree Mahedev School

Carnevali Foundation partners with Chay Ya (a non-profit organization that builds schools in and near Kathmandu, Nepal). The Mahadev School, in the municipality of Shubhakalika, was a great challenge for Chay Ya to complete due to roads being washed out and access impossible.

We are thankful for their persistence and commitment to building a two-story school with 5 classrooms, as well as girl’s, boys’ and accessible bathrooms.

Chay Ya is a dedicated organization through which the Carnevali Foundation is proud to fund projects.
