It is not a new concept; Spain has always been known as a source for good value wines. The truth is that Spain has a history known as a bulk wine producer. It has 3 million acres of vines, the most acreage planted in grapes of any other country in the world. It is the third-largest wine-producing country in the world after France and Italy. You might wonder why the most extensive acreage in grapes doesn't equate to the most wine, but the rugged terrain and the hot, dry climate limit the yields possible. A civil and political upheaval history through most of the 20th century, along with a couple of World Wars, left much of Spain's vineyards a mess. In the 1950s, under the rule of military dictator Francisco Franco, Spain set up large cooperative wineries during the 1950s. All the excellent vineyards and the bad pour their wine into one, making all Spanish wine mediocre. It wasn't until after Franco died in 1975 that Spain's age of mediocre wines started to change for the better.

|
In 1986, Spain joined the European Union, and the Spanish wine industry got some much-needed support. A move that has increased investment in wineries, specifically in technology and irrigation, which has only been allowed since 2003. A period of Francophilia also changed the source of much of the oak used in barrels from American to French oak and increased the length of the time Spanish wines are aged in the barrel, resulting in better red wines and a surge in popularity. Another great advantage in buying Spanish wine is that they release their wines when they are ready to drink. The result is an age of renewed interest and appreciation for Spanish wines and exploration for great value wines in some of the back pathways of this reawakened behemoth wine producer.

|
The fact remains that the choices of Spanish wines are daunting. With over 4,000 wineries and 400 varieties of grapes, it is no wonder consumers are feeling a little confused. To help us as a guide to finding many of these small Spanish producers of outstanding quality to cost wines, we often rely on specialized importers, themselves longtime family businesses, that know where to find these excellent wines. Gil Family wines represent great wines you would otherwise never hear about.

In 1916, Juan Gil Jiménez decided to leave his job as a stone cutter and try his hand at making wine in Jumilla. Four generations later, in an area where bulk wine was the standard until not long ago, the Gil family has brought together ten different artisanal vineyards from across Spain's major wine regions. Their goal is to get the small-production philosophy and give it greater exposure. The result is a range of wines that tells a complete story of Spain's dramatically varied wine regions and the colorful characters who create them. Gil Family Estates owns over 3,500 acres of vineyards and today is headed by fourth-generation Miquel and Angel Gil.

Cellars Can Blau, founded in 2003, is one of the oldest projects of the Gil Family in Jumilla. Placed in El Molar, in the D.O. Montsant, this winery is the most diverse project regarding the grape varieties and soil type. The Can Blau winery is in the Denomination of Origin of Montsant in northern Catalonia, Spain, adjacent to its famous neighbor, Priorat. Like Priorat, Montsant soils are llicorella, a granite and slate composite. The altitude here is very high, and Montsant means 'Holy Mountain.' The Gil Family, along with winemaker Victor Rodriguez operate the winery. Blau is a blend of 40% Carignan, 40% Syrah, and 20% Grenache. The Grenache grapes are grown on llicorella soils, Carignan on clay soils, and the Syrah on limestone. The wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. If ever you were looking for a great value wine from an upcoming growing region in Spain, this is the wine for you.

Bright purple. Spice-accented black and blue fruit aromas are complemented by violets and woodsmoke. Round and seamless on the palate, offering juicy blackberry and cassis flavors that are lifted and firmed by zesty acidity.
