Recognizing the Volunteers Behind Our Impact

Dear Neighborhood Center Community,

April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month, and here at The Richmond Neighborhood Center, we’re taking this moment to celebrate the heart and soul of our work—our volunteers.

From our bustling food pantry lines to vibrant youth programs, 2,000 incredible community members give their time, energy, and compassion throughout the year to make everything we do possible. Each week, our volunteers show up to hand out groceries, deliver meals to seniors, mentor youth, support our events, and so much more. Their warmth and commitment bring life to our mission and ensure that everyone in the Richmond District feels seen, supported, and connected.

Our volunteers embody the very best of this neighborhood—diverse, generous, and deeply rooted in the spirit of service. On behalf of our entire team, thank you for all that you do. We are so grateful to stand alongside you in this work.

Below are just a few of the amazing people who inspire us every day!

With deep appreciation,

Michelle Cusano

The Richmond Neighborhood Center

Raj – Pantry & Home Delivered Groceries (HDG) Volunteer

A George Washington High School alum and future med student, Raj returned to The Richmond Neighborhood Center during his gap year because he missed the strong sense of family he found here.

“I came back because I wanted to feel that community again.”

Malvina – Pantry Volunteer

New to San Francisco, Malvina was looking for connection and purpose. Volunteering at the Lafayette pantry gave her both—and helped her start to feel at home in a new country.

“Now the Richmond feels like home.”

Ling – HDG + Pantry Volunteer (and Peter, our HDG Coordinator's mom!)

Ling volunteers four days a week at multiple pantry locations and encouraged her son Peter to join. He now serves as our Home Delivered Groceries (HDG) coordinator!

“Come volunteer! It’s rewarding, fun, and benefits everyone.”

Courtney – Lafayette Pantry Volunteer

Originally from Indiana, Courtney began volunteering between freelance gigs. She wanted to make a tangible difference during a difficult political moment—and she found purpose in connecting with others.

“It’s about meeting people where they are—and realizing how many neighbors benefit from a little extra support.”
