Château Recougne
ďťżBordeaux SupĂŠrieur 2018
Is it just me, or does everyone have a pair of old shoes that one keeps because of how well they feel when you put them on? They are reliable, have been around forever, and are not the flashiest pair in the wardrobe, but they never let you down, and life just seems better when you have them on. Chateau Recougne is like that. A reliable red has been the go-to wine for restaurant wine lists and Bordeaux lovers forever and has been a great seller for us for as long as I have been selling wine. Yes, that long. With the famed 2018 vintage and a great price, it is time to pull out those old shoes and go dancing again.

Chateau Recougne has a long history of being recognized as a quality wine. Legend has it that during a stay at Château Recougne in the 16th century, King Henry IV was so impressed by the quality of the wine he declared the château’s land ‘terra recognita’ – recognized land. The wax seal you see on the label was a symbol of the highly coveted designation. The label is a reminder that if the wine is good enough for the king, it’s great for me.
The Milhade family has for four generations made wine on the right bank of Bordeaux, always as a family affair. Xavier Milhade, overseeing his family’s properties of Chateau Recougne and Chateau Boutisse, has passed his winemaking talent to his son, Marc, now one of the leaders of the younger generation in the Saint-Emilion area. Marc’s philosophy and energy are guided towards more work in the vineyard and less intervention in the cellar. Marc’s winemaking skills continue with Chateau Recougne’s historical reputation going back centuries as a great wine from an exceptional terroir, well beyond its Bordeaux Supérieur label. Marc’s sister Elodie is also taking on an increasingly important role in running the non-winemaking side of the estates, which includes Chateau Boutisse in St. Emilion and her husband’s Chateau Tour Bayard in Montagne-Saint-Emilion.
Chateau Recougne is located near the hills of Fronsac overlooking the Dordogne; their 250 acres of vines cover the gentle sandy-clay slops and take advantage of a subsoil rich in iron oxide. Vineyards are mainly planted in Merlot and also include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Carmenère grapes. Merlot is best suited to the gravelly clay terroir and is the majority planting, complemented by both Cabernets. Vines average over 50 years in age, and they use environmentally friendly vineyard practices, minimal spraying, and low yields from green harvesting and canopy management.
Reducing the yield in the vineyard is done through green harvesting (removing green grapes before they get ripe and concentrate the remaining fruit). The grapes are mostly destemmed, with up to about 10-15% of the whole cluster included for structure. Fermentation takes place in traditional cement vats, followed by 15 months of aging in large vessels (no oak barrel) before bottling with minimal filtration.

To sum up, a historic chateau that cares and continues to make great wine at a great price. When you taste the wine, you are reminded of why this wine has been so reliable for so long, a comfortable glass of wine that feels good. A wine that consistently brings a smile to your face.

From The Winery
After the disastrous frosts of 2017, the normal crop set of 2018 was a welcome relief. Spring was wet and cool, with some damaging hail and significant mildew pressure, but late summer was warm and dry, and the harvest took place under perfect conditions. The wines are full, rich with fruit and tannins, with an extra element of juiciness that give them immediate appeal.

Marc Milhades meticulous attention to vineyard detail has clearly paid off here, as the 2018 Recougne Rouge showcases the richness of the vintage balanced by the energy and liveliness that can come only from healthy vines. The nose offers scents of mocha and toffee, while the palate bursts with fresh currant and blueberry flavors. The tannins are sweet and round, framed by a fresh minerality.

Accolades
Dense tannins and ripe black fruits indicate the richness of this wine. The tannins are still young, giving the wine a dry feel at this stage. But generous fruits are there and will come through shortly. Buy Now. Wine Enthusiast 89/90pts pts

Château Recougne Bordeaux SupÊrieur 2018

It was a joy to taste the new vintage of Chateau Recougne 2018. After the wine opened up in the glass for 10 minutes, the aromas were intoxicating. Fruits aromas of dark berries and currants. Lush and full in the mouth, ripe fruit on the palate, polished tannins, and a medium-long finish. I suspected it might open up even more after a little bit of breathing, and it did—what a great value at $12. I know there are a lot of Recougne lovers out there that buy this wine regularly, and now is the time to load up. If you haven’t tried this wine in a while, now is the time to load up. Now it is time to dig out those old comfortable shoes and smile with a glass of wine.

A Quick Word On Ordering
Orders must be done by replying to this email. The reason is that I need to keep control of the inventory in one central spot. Emailing or calling your favorite wine geek at one of our four stores may not get your orders in on time to be counted or processed and creates a helter-skelter for us to get you the wine. For the same reason, ordering on our online Web Store is linked to our regular price, and this sale price is only offered on the email platform. It is also why it takes me some time to respond due to the deluge of orders that I sometimes get. We haven't reached the efficiency or volume of Amazon yet, and in this pandemic environment, simply operations sometimes prove difficult. Thank you in advance for your patience.
