The Olympic Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals have been earned by committed athletes who have trained, participated in rigorous trials and tests to perfect their skills. Every athlete is a winner because they achieved the ultimate goal: earning the opportunity to compete in the Olympic games.
You too are making a commitment to reach a goal. You are sharpening your skills through your classwork, homework, and projects. You are engaging in your own form of self-competition through tests, quizzes, and assignments. You take the Bronze when you confidently master a skill in math, grammar, or conversational English. You are reaching for Silver when you accomplish a level-gain on your CASAS Goals test or when you start the next level of your ESL/GED class.
But what about reaching the Gold medal status? What specific goals have you set this semester for yourself? At Chesapeake College, you are already a winner, because you have been invited to compete for the Gold! Are you Ready? Get Set! Let’s Go!

A Conversation with Jason Mullen
Dean for Workforce & Skilled Trades
| |
By Dr. Pat Daniels
At the beginning of the Fall semester, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Mr. Jason Mullens to speak about career and job training opportunities at Chesapeake College. Here are the highlights of our conversation:
Career and Job Training Programs: If you are looking for career opportunities, job training opportunities, or just a job, this is the place to begin. These programs are designed to meet the local workforce needs across the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Listed below are the most popular courses. See all the course offerings in the Trades Catalogue or online.
| |
High School Diploma Requirement: No High School Diploma is needed to enroll in most of these programs. However, enrollment in a GED program is recommended, because you will need a high school diploma to enroll in the Nursing Program and Surgical Technology courses. Also, the state requires a high school diploma for state licensure in all areas.
Scholarship and Grant Money: Money is available on an annual and bi-annual basis, especially for ESL and GED students. Put in your application as soon as you know what program you are applying for to get money for that program. While many Workforce and Trade licensure programs begin in the fall, they can take 1-4 years to complete. There are many programs such as CNA, Phlebotomist, Marine Service Technician, Advanced Manufacturing, and Welding programs, that take as short as a few weeks to earn an industry credential.
Job Placement: Manufacturing and Marine Trades post the most job positions. Many students successfully enter jobs in the Health Professions and in the fields of HVAC, electrical work, and construction after completing their course work and receiving their certification.
Immigrant Status: To qualify for enrollment in most programs and eligibility for scholarship/grant programs, immigrant students may need to provide proof of legal residency or work authorization for the state of Maryland. (ex. Health Profession Programs.)
New for 2025 - The Mobile Welding Classroom - Chesapeake College is ready to launch its newest innovation in the Trades Program. It is an Entry Level Welding Skills class in a mobile trailer classroom. The Welding class is a 4-5 hour per day intensive training program, and the course is 6-8 weeks long. Welding resources and materials are provided for each student. Students who successfully complete this course will earn their certification in beginner level welding. The Welding Trailer Classroom will move around the 5 counties that Chesapeake College services and will be in a neighborhood near you.
For more information about registering for any of these programs send emails to skilledtrades@chesapeake.edu.

Day of the Dead – Miriam Rubi Cruz, Jose Alejandro Cruz, Cynthia Longoria, Zaid De Jesus Rivera Lopez, Dominga Manuel Hernandez, Saul Cruz Valle
We celebrate the Day of the Dead between October 31st and November 2nd. We create an altar with marigold flowers (cempasuchil, flor de muerto), food (tamales, carnitas, chocolate buns), beverages, beer, and pictures of our family members and friends who have passed away and their souls are in heaven. There is also water and salt to purify the souls. We make a path with flower petals and sometimes candles to guide the souls to the altar. On the altar are the pictures of our family members and friends who have died. In some traditions we cleanse the house with incense, so the souls arrive healthy.
Christmas Eve & Christmas – Amina Abosekena, Odeth Camacho, Rosa Maria Estevez deAdrian, Karina Fernandez, Edison German Vargas Gaitan, Raisa Kosareva, Leonid Kosarev, Juan David Bohorquez Cortes, Palmores Martinez Hernandez, Ana Isabel Fernandez Torres, Lucia Paez Perez
We buy and decorate our tree early in December, and we celebrate on Christmas Eve by opening and exchanging gifts. We decorate our tree on Thanksgiving Day and put the baby Jesus and nativity under the tree. In our home we break a pinata for the children on Christmas Day and give out lots of candy on Christmas Eve. In Russia we celebrate Christmas twice, on December 25th (Gregorian calendar) and January 7th (Julian calendar). Following local Ortohox Catholic traditions, we celebrate Christmas from January 13 to the 14th. In my family we celebrate the Day of the Candles before Christmas on December 7th. We light candles to represent faith, love, prosperity, and health. In the Dominican tradition, we celebrate with food. We make pigeon peas and rice with chicken, and roast pork with a variety of vegetables, and fresh fruit in season for Christmas Eve. On Christmas we eat lots of food like tamales, carnitas, and drink ponche, a special drink. We also bake cookies. We play games and dance.
New Years Eve – Mariacruz Rubio Sanchez, Jose Emanuel Escoto
In our home we give out 12 grapes to each family member on New Years Eve to make 1 wish per grape for the New Year. We eat lots of food, like tamales and pozole, drink a hot beverage called ponche, and dance. Then we go to sleep. In our home, we watch movies on New Year's Day with the family.

Chat Group Texting Etiquette | |
Are you in a class group, a WhatsApp group, a Facebook group, or a self-created social chat group? Etiquette is all about being mindful of other people in your group. Here are a few etiquette rules for you and your texting chat group.
- Be respectful: Use appropriate greetings and avoid rude or offensive language.
- Never say anything in the chat you would not say in person.
- Keep the conversation on topic: stick to the subject of the group chat.
- Avoid sending personal information messages: Send an individual email, text, or phone call to the intended person.
- Don’t start a conversation late at night.
- Keep your phone on silent mode: Text notification noises can be annoying to others around you.
- Announce when you are leaving the group chat.
We use WhatsApp groups for every ESL class. Here are a few tips to consider:
- When you’re added to a group, WhatsApp shows you information about the group so you can decide if you want to stay or leave. In addition to the group name and who added you, you can quickly see who created the group, when it was created, and the description of the group.
- You can use WhatsApp on your phone and sync your account on a tablet or a computer.
- You can make changes to any message within 15 minutes of posting the message. You press and hold the message you want to edit, select edit, change your message, send it again.
- You can use the search function to look up previous messages, using specific key words used on that conversation.

Finding job opportunities on the Eastern Shore of Maryland can be achieved through a combination of online resources, local networking, and traditional job search methods. Here are some data-driven strategies to help you in your job search:
-
Online Job Portals: Utilize popular job search websites that cater to the Eastern Shore region, such as Indeed, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, and Monster. These platforms allow you to filter job listings based on location and job type.

State and Local Job Boards: Check the Maryland Department of Labor website and other local employment agencies for job listings specific to the Eastern Shore area. Websites like Maryland Workforce Exchange (mwejobs.maryland.gov) offer job listings and resources tailored to the state.
-
Networking: Attend job fairs, industry events, and networking functions in the Eastern Shore region. Building connections with professionals and employers can lead to hidden job opportunities and referrals
-
