The City of Vista Simplifies ADU Construction with Pre-Approved Plans and Waived Fees

The City of Vista has streamlined the process for residents interested in adding an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) to their properties. Commonly referred to as a "second unit" or "granny flat," ADUs are self-contained living spaces that can either be attached or detached from the primary residence. These units provide full independent living amenities, including a kitchen, bathroom, and sleeping area, making them an ideal option for expanded living space or additional rental income.

ADUs can be constructed as new builds, by converting existing space within the home, or through the repurposing of other structures. To further simplify the process, the City now offers 10 free pre-approved ADU plans for detached units. By utilizing these plans, residents can save time and reduce costs, as plan check fees are waived. However, standard permit and inspection fees will still apply.

This initiative reflects the City's commitment to providing affordable, flexible housing solutions while supporting property owners in their development efforts.
