Fireworks-Related Arrests Made in Vista on July 4

Sheriff’s deputies made two arrests in Vista on July 4 in connection with illegal fireworks and firearms violations. In the first case, deputies arrested a suspect during a traffic stop near University Drive after he allegedly arranged to sell illegal fireworks to undercover detectives. During the stop, deputies discovered the suspect was armed with a loaded handgun and carrying additional ammunition without a permit. A search of the vehicle also turned up dangerous fireworks, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and brass knuckles.

In a separate incident later that evening, deputies on patrol at Foothill Oak Elementary School encountered an individual cleaning up a large amount of mortar-style fireworks in the parking lot. The suspect admitted he did not have a permit and was found with 22 pounds of unfired fireworks. He was cited at the scene, and the fireworks were confiscated.

Clarifying the Facts on Vista's Protected Bike Lane Project

The City of Vista is clarifying recent media reports that stated the cost of removing elements of the Protected Bike Lane Project in District 4. The actual cost to remove berms and select delineators along South Melrose Drive and Sycamore Avenue is $204,000—not $500,000 as reported in the media and online. These modifications were approved by the City Council in June 2025, and the removal work is expected to begin later this month.

No other changes are currently being made to the Protected Bike Lane Project in other districts. The only adjustment beyond the removal is a pause in construction on East Vista Way while the City completes a separate grant-funded median project. Final striping is underway on East Vista Way and Bobier Drive, and the overall project is expected to be completed by September 30, 2025.
