Lasting Impact

The business of philanthropy doesn't stop with the disbursement to the charity. Impact-generating giving starts when the donation leaves the personal bank account of the donor and moves into the charitable account, be that the foundation, donor advised fund, community foundation or the recipient organization directly.

In the final instalment of our Trends in Philanthropy series we dive into how donors move from talking about collaboration to formalizing Collaboration as a System. You can find the articles on the other trends in past newsletters.

The first piece features the work of one our clients, Silver Gummy Foundation. It explores the concepts around ecosystem grantmaking. The second article, highlights how deepening the relationship between the donor and the charity acts as a multiplier effect leading to the "buying" of outcomes.

As we approach the Giving Season we are hosting, in partnership with Place2Give Foundation and Transform Philanthropy, two workshops on the rising trend of Donor Advised Funds. Check out the details below.

What we are thinking...

Architecting Impact

What do a theatre company, a South Asian men’s group, a coastal women’s emergency shelter and a Kinesiologist have in common?

Aside from the start of a bad joke where these folks meet in a bar, they are all part of one private foundation’s approach to reducing gender-based violence, and societal violence overall, in Canada.

The Partnership Gap:

Why Great Philanthropy Requires Great Organizations

For years, philanthropy has started with a simple question: What does your organization need?

It is a good question, but we would argue it is no longer the most important one. As philanthropy evolves, perhaps the better question is: What are we trying to accomplish together?

What do we do with all this stuff?

This summer Karma & Cents team members had the privledge of two "behind-the-scenes" tours of iconic Canadian museums. The Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum in Grand Prairie, Alberta and the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, Alberta.

Ever wonder what happens to all the artifacts that are donated to museums that don't go on display? Check out the photos below to get a sense of where all this stuff goes.

The Glenbow's vault spans several floors and there are currently 3,000 objects under restoration.

The Dinosaur Museum storage is connected to the paleontology lab.

Removing the Curtain: Understanding & Stewarding Donor Advised Funds

Sept. 22, 10;30am Mountain via Zoom

In partnership with Transform Philanthropy and DAFDay we are hosting two webinars on the growing trends around Donor Advised Funds (DAFs).

For Charities & Non-Profits

Sept. 22nd - 10:30am Mountain via Zoom

$2 billion. That's how much Canadian charities received from donor-advised funds (DAF) in the last fiscal year alone and the number is only growing.

Is your team ready to spot these gifts, thank the right donor, and turn a one-time grant into a lasting relationship?

We recently asked charity partners about their DAF experience. The #1 question we heard: how do you build a relationship with a donor you can't contact directly?

Join Place2Give and Transform Philanthropy for a free 60-minute webinar: Understanding & Stewarding Donor-Advised Funds.

Get a practical playbook for DAF stewardship, real examples of stewardship in action, and live Q&A.

This workshop is designed for non-profits, their leadership and their fundraising management. We will discuss how Donor Advised Funds work, how to engage with DAFs and how to effectively steward the DAF Donor relationship.

Are you ready to have that conversation with your clients, or will it (and the assets) go somewhere else?

Join Karma & Cents and Transform Philanthropy for a free 60-minute webinar: DAFs at the Advisory Table - Bringing Donor Advised Funds into the Wealth Management Conversation.

Get a practical framework for spotting philanthropic opportunities, a clear look at how the advisor-DAF provider partnership works (without giving up assets under management), and live Q&A.

This workshop is for wealth advisors who want to better understand how DAFs integrate with overall wealth planning, how to engage in the philanthropy conversation with clients and the business of DAFs in the financial landscape.
