For a child who has experienced trauma, activities like drawing, painting, crafting or simply squishing some Play-Doh® can be a pathway to recovery and healing.
Old Mill Center’s Child, Teen and Family Counseling staff often employ art in both telehealth (video) and in-person therapy sessions. Here are just a few reasons why:
Textures and tactile tools help clients focus on the present
Art aids in developing mindfulness about current experiences, thought processes and feelings
Art facilitates self-soothing during difficult moments
Art helps clients cope with memories and emotions that seem overwhelming
Using our Art Room for in-person counseling.
Our Art Room meets regulations for health and safety as an in-person therapy space during COVID. This enables us to increase opportunities for in-person counseling to better meet some clients’ needs.
As sharing supplies is not currently possible, our therapists have been sending art materials home. This allows clients to continue working between sessions. We’re pleased with how well art therapy transfers between telehealth and in-person counseling sessions, and pleased with the progress we see in our kids using these tools.
Lots of art takes lots of supplies...
Every kid (and therapist) knows: you can never have too many art supplies! Staying well-stocked is a challenge. We always appreciate donations of items such as:
Shoeboxes
Magazines
Glitter glue
Play-Doh®
Art canvases (small ones that are easily transported)
Canvas paper
Washable paint
If you can help, supplies can be brought to our reception desk. Thank you for being part of the healing process.
This year’s winner will choose either a 2021 Subaru Forester or a 2021 Toyota RAV4 (min. value $25,000).
We’ll draw the winning ticket during our 41st Annual Auction, to be held virtually on May 8th. Tickets are $100 and only 400 will be sold. Great odds and a great cause!
