Greetings!

March has a couple of less-spoken-about but very important holidays. For example, March 3 is Caregiver Appreciation Day, and March 8 is International Women's Day.

Whether you're in the helping professions or are caring for a loved one, it's important to honor and acknowledge caregivers on a regular basis. However, it's still nice to have a special holiday in their honor. Sometimes caregiving is rewarded, but more often than not, it's a job that's taken for granted. For the most part, it's a thankless job, so little gestures can make all the difference. For example, my mother is in an assisted-living facility on the opposite coast. Although she's well taken care of there, I still have her former cleaning lady, Regina (who'd worked for her for more than 30 years), visit her twice a week just so my mom can see a familiar face. I'm very grateful because my mother is not a good communicator, and Regina gives me updates and sends me photos. In addition to sending Christmas gifts, I will also consider sending Regina a little something every March 2.

International Women's Day is also another very important holiday. The mission behind this day is to celebrate women's rights and to inspire others to fight for gender equality. Needless to say, women have come a long way over the past 100 or so years. In fact, as we head into another election year, it's important to remember that this year marks the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment, which granted American women the right to vote! We've already had a female presidential candidate, and we now have two women in the running to be the Democratic candidate. It's wonderful, and sometimes difficult to believe. Having perspective is important. I believe it's important to take some time this month to honor all those women who made a difference in others' lives, both personally and professionally.

Who are the female movers and shakers you admire, those who made a difference in your life? I'd love to hear from you!

Instant Calm by Paul Wilson (self-help).

I've had this book on my bookshelf for a long time. It's one of those works to be picked up in times of need. It's helpul for those who suffer from anxiety but also can be useful for those who need caregivers and those who are caregivers. It offers easy-to-understand (and follow) tips on how to remain calm during challenging times. Wilson suggests reading the entire book and then choosing which tools work best for you. He believes in the importance of being prepared, being positive, being practical, and being patient. Many of the techniques revolve around proper breathing, since when we're under stress, our breathing tends to become highly shallow.

We are all in search of calm, and this compact book offers ideas for everyone. Highly recommended!
