As a S&C Coach, I primarily work with high school team sports. One of the biggest programming mistakes I see is coaches conditioning their players in ways that do not replicate the sport’s demands. How many times have you seen a coach directing the team to run (jog) laps? How about back-to-back gassers that in no way replicate the conditioning demands of the sport? Or worst of all, you missed a blocking assignment…now go run laps.
This type of conditioning is not optimal. There is a better way. As Vern Gambetta says, “Practice time is precious.” It is a daily opportunity to improve skill, tactics, and sport specific fitness. Wasting time slogging laps does not optimize the opportunity to improve. It does nothing to make the athlete better and probably makes them less fit for the demands of their sport.
