CPSM Draft Standard and Webinar on Anti-Indigenous Racism
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba (CPSM) has launched a public consultation to receive input on the draft Standard of Practice – Practicing Medicine to Eliminate Anti-Indigenous Racism. This is becoming a common approach for many regulatory bodies across Canada, as part of their mandate to self-regulate the profession in the public interest.
This builds on work by both the CPSM and CMA to recognize harms and trauma experienced by Indigenous peoples from the health care system, and the health gaps between Indigenous and non-Indigenous patients that continue to widen.
CPSM registrants, the public, Indigenous people, organizations, and physicians, and other stakeholders are invited to review the Standard and provide feedback. View the consultation documents here and submit your constructive feedback by November 11, 2024.
You can also join a webinar about the draft standard on Wed Oct 23 with CPSM Registrar Dr. Ainslie Mihalchuk and Dr. Lisa Monkman, Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Advisory Circle. Register here.
Breast Screening Plan Evolves
This week, the government announced the minimum age for breast cancer screening self-referrals in the province will drop to 40 by December 2026. This responded to legislation introduced by the opposition calling for the same goal. Previously, the Province said the eligibility age would drop to 45 from the current 50 by the end of next year.
For now, screening continues to be available for women 50 or older.
