State Board of Education Elections

State boards of education are integral to public education, and serve as an unbiased advocate for education decision making. SBE focuses on the big picture and makes policy based on the best interests of Washington students. The ballots for the State Board of Education were released on September 30 by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI).

Candidates include:

  • Eastern, Position 1 - MJ Bolt                 
  • Western, Position 3 - John Towers
  • Western, Position 3 - Mary E. Fertakis, M.Ed. 
  • Private School Representative - Jan Brown

Ballots for this election must be postmarked by October 16. OSPI plans to count between October 23 and 25. Visit the OSPI elections site for more information.

Rules Update: SBE Files Proposed Rules about High School Graduation Requirements

On September 18, SBE filed proposed rules about Chapter 180-51 WAC (High School Graduation Requirements) following the September 12 approval of said rules.

At the end of August, SBE officially submitted to make changes as necessary to align rule to current policy or practice, correct references to law, implement recently passed legislation, improve readability of the rule, or make other changes identified during the review of the Chapter. SBE will host a public hearing on graduation pathway options rules on October 24. In-person, oral testimony will be open at pre-arranged hearing sites. See our Facebook event for more information.
