Emblem Michael Mondavi

Napa Valley Cabernet 2019

The popularity of Cabernet Sauvignon, especially Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, can directly be related to one man. Robert Mondavi. Before 1966, the wine industry in California had no identity. Blends were all the craze in those early days of California wine; varietal wines were not the norm. Before 1967, dessert wines surpassed table wines in volume sales, and it wasn’t till 1993 that varietal wine sales passed generic wine sales in the U.S. Before 1978, the BATF required varietal wines needed 51% of a grape to label the bottle a varietal wine. The other 49% could be anything and generally was cheaper juice from a lesser grape. One of the most historical figures that championed varietal wines was Robert Mondavi, who in 1966 broke from his family business Charles Krug Winery and philosophy of producing jug wines and set out on his own. He bought what is now the famous Robert Mondavi winery, the first winery to be built in Napa Valley in the post-Prohibition era and focusing on varietal wines. He is considered the godfather of California varietal wines.

After the Mondavi family sold their winery and business in 2004 and Michael Mondavi bought a Carneros Creek facility and surrounding Gallery vineyard. Michael, along with his son Rob, continues his family legacy by creating some of Napa’s best Cabernets with Michael Mondavi Family estates. Creating a sustainable legacy to be passed down through generations, starting with Rob, Jr., who now serves as President of Winemaking. Michael Mondavi Family Estate showcases both family-owned and estate wines in the Napa Valley, as well as other famous wines crafted from grapes sourced from vineyards throughout California. Michael Mondavi Family estates own nearly 300 acres of land in Napa, with more than 100 acres planted to grapes. Michael believes in natural farming and has ensured that all estate vineyards are farmed sustainably, with the winery recently achieving recognition as a “Napa Green Certified Winery.” For fruit not grown on Estate vineyards, Michael has developed long-term relationships with trusted growers.

Emblem Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced primarily from Oso and Animo vineyards. Oso ranch is nestled between Sugarloaf and Howell Mountain. Located in the warmer northeastern quadrant of Napa Valley, the 95-acre stone-lined terraces of the sloped Oso Vineyard deliver intensely flavored and structured Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, as well as a vibrant Sauvignon Blanc. The other key source for Emblem is Animo vineyards, bought by Michael Mondavi while specifically looking to acquire hillside property in 1999. He visited this site with his immediate family, when his daughter Dina who had studied in Florence, called the region “animo” after seeing the virgin property for the first time – referring to its soul or its life. The name stuck, and the site (15 acres) was eventually planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon. Emblem Napa Valley Cabernet offers the family’s expression of the modern style of Napa Valley Cabernet without a hefty price tag.

Winemaker Notes

This Cabernet Sauvignon is brilliant ruby in color with hints of purple at the core. It is an approachable, any occasion wine, with concentrated notes of plum, blackberry, and anise. On the palate it is fruity and firm with classic flavors of cassis, huckleberry, plum, coffee bean and toasty oak.

Blend: 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, 7% Petite Sirah

18 months ageing in French oak barrels (66% new)

Critical Acclaim

A balanced and fresh cabernet with pine needles, fresh plums, blackberries, currants and herbs on the nose. It’s full-bodied, with firm and fine tannins. Fresh and mineral at the end. Drink now or hold. James Suckling 90 pts

Fine Wine Offer

Emblem Michael Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet 2019

We were fortunate enough to be offered this wine at a great price due to our distributor needing to get into the next vintage. Naturally, we are passing these savings on to you because that’s what we do. When the staff tasted the wine, we immediately realized this is the type of wine that needed to breathe first so that the components could come together. It is a dark wine, not only in color but on the palate. Dark fruit and plum with cola, olives, and herbs. Full-bodied that became evenly balanced, with fine chalky tannins and a very long dark cherry finish. This is the wine to have with a big stew or steak with all the ‘fixins.’

A Quick Word On Ordering

Orders must be done by replying to this email. The reason is that I need to keep control of the inventory in one central spot. Emailing or calling your favorite wine geek at one of our four stores may not get your orders in on time to be counted or processed and this creates a helter-skelter for us to get you the wine. For the same reason, ordering on our online Web Store is linked to our regular price, and this sale price is only offered on the email platform. It is also why it takes me some time to respond due to the deluge of orders that I sometimes get. We haven't reached the efficiency or volume of Amazon yet, and in this post-pandemic environment, simple operations sometimes prove difficult. Thank you in advance for your patience.
