Emotional Support Animal vs. Service Animal

Since my book came out (No, You Can’t Bring Your Ferret to Work: HR Tales of the Unexpected), I’ve had a lot of questions, specifically about the title. So I’m here to answer them.


Did someone really try to bring a ferret into work? 

I’m sure someone has. The real story was told to me by a colleague involving an alligator in a shopping cart for her employer’s Bring Your Pet to Work Day. This prompted a complete revision of the event to allow only domesticated animals. FYI: June 16-20, 2025, is Take Your Pet To Work Week®.


But can you bring a ferret to work? No. 


What if the ferret is an emotional support ferret? No. 


But why not? Emotional support animals are not considered service animals, which are allowed in the workplace. In addition, only dogs that can be specially trained as service animals are allowed to accompany their owners into the workplace. Thus eliminating the emotional support alligator, baby tiger, cat, lion, ferret, snake, and/or any other domesticated animal or wildlife.
