Evodia Old Vine Garnacha 2020
“A Spanish Red Value that Puts California to Shame” - Wine Spectator
Wine Spectator, in that same article, poses the serious question, “Why can’t more wine regions—particularly California—make wines like Altovinum’s Evodia Old Vines Garnacha?” The article goes on to say, “Too many of the reds selling for $10 or less aren’t worth a spit.” Since its inception, Evodia has always been a house favorite here at Yankee Spirits for the simple fact that it was made from the beginning to be an excellent value for your dollar. At a special price of $8 a bottle, no Californian wine can compare in value for your money spent.

Evodia is a creation by wine importer exceptional Eric Solomon, winemaker Jean-Marc Lafage, and vineyard expert Yolanda Diaz. This wine came together when they were working on a project in Calatayud. The landscape in Calatayud is hilly and dotted with impressive architecture, with relics of the Roman, Moorish, and Christian occupations. The region is a majestic dry area with almond, cherry, and olive-tree sites interwoven with vineyards amongst the banks of the crisscrossing rivers lined with apple, pear, and peach trees.

Calatayud is known for its big and bold Garnacha wines (Grenache), representing over three-quarters of vineyard plantings. It was here this team found a unique village in Calatayud, Atea. At over 3,000 feet above sea level, it is the highest-elevation village in all of Calatayud. Even more interesting is that the soil here is black schist, the same soil one can find in the Priorat. Together, this band of three created the winery Altovinum, and with the unique soils, high altitude, old-vine Garnacha gave us the wine Evodia. Evodia is Greek for aroma or fragrance.

Evodia means perfume. This is the perfect representation of the Grenache from Aragon with its own clones and flavors. The landscape where Evodia is grown is very special for its altitude and slopes, resulting in a very pure and fresh wine. 80% destemmed and uncrushed and 20% full cluster grapes. Fermentation in concrete tanks during 20 days with soft extractions. Post-fermentative maceration for 15 days using the topping technique. This way, a more balanced extraction is obtained, and a lower grapes’ oxidation of the grapes happens. A small part of the blend ages in barrels. (20% in barrels and 80% in concrete tanks) Vegan.

This 100% Garnacha offers a lovely perfume of spice box, mineral, and wild cherry. This perfectly balanced mix of flavors lends itself to an intensely fruity wine with loads of taste, a smooth texture, and a pure, fruit-filled finish.
The very young and juicy 2020 Evodia comes from a year with more rain than average and moderately warm temperatures that resulted in an early harvest of a generous crop that delivered wines of lower alcohol (14.5%) and more freshness. It fermented with some 20% full clusters and had a very soft vinification and extraction with no pump-overs. This is always very aromatic (it’s what the name means), and in 2020 it’s even paler and more ethereal then the 2019 that was already impressive and quite a change from previous vintages and other wines from the cooperative. Only 20% of the volume matured in oak and the wine is not oaky at all and has contained ripeness and very light extraction. This is bright and elegant, fresh and very pleasant to drink. Incredible for the price. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate 91 pts
This Week's Wine Insider Offer
Evodia Old Vine Garnacha 2020 | Everyone was excited to try the new vintage of Evodia. The 2019 had a lot of hard-core followers, and we were hoping the 2020 would be able to follow in its footsteps. As it turned out, this new vintage exceeded our expectations, and in many ways, we thought it was better than the previous vintage. Brighter fruit and more acid balance. Aromas of black fruit and pepper. On the pallet, we had ripe strawberries and cherry fruit, cranberry, hibiscus, and Earl Grey tea—light tannins balanced by bright acids. We had in our tasting group a good customer, and I asked him what he would pay for this wine. He said $12 would be a reasonable price. I asked him if $8 would be a good sale price. He said he would buy it at $12, but at $8, he would stock up in mass for the holidays. Good advice for this is certainly a wine for the masses if your crowd has good taste. Thanksgiving and holiday parties are around the corner if this wine would last that long in your cellar.
