šŸ’› A Message from Our President

Dear AGA Family,

As the autumn leaves begin to turn, football takes over our Sundays, and we start to feel that crispness in the air; we'd like to give you an update on our AGA journey. During this seasonal shift, we face a pressing challenge: an influx of owner turn-ins requiring an urgent call for foster families.

The need for foster homes is more crucial than ever before. Each foster family becomes a lifeline for Goldens transitioning from shelters or seeking new beginnings. Your warmth, care, and temporary haven can be the hope these dogs require. By opening your heart and home to a furry friend, you're not just providing shelter but becoming a vital part of their journey toward a forever home.

This call is not just for those with ample experience; it's an invitation to anyone willing to make a difference. Fostering is a transformative experience, offering a chance to witness the resilience and gratitude of these Goldens as they embark on a new chapter.

If you've ever considered fostering, now is the perfect time to take the next step. Your act of kindness can mean the world to a Golden in need. Reach out, become a foster family, and play an integral role in shaping a brighter future for these lovable companions.

Thank you for considering this heartfelt plea. Together, we can make sure that every Golden in need finds a temporary home filled with love, care, and the promise of a brighter tomorrow.

Warmly,

Patti Dickey

🐾 Did You Know?

Over 3 million dogs enter shelters in the U.S. each year, and Golden Retrievers are no exception. These dogs aren’t broken; they’re often the innocent victims of life’s unexpected turns: job loss, illness, divorce, or a move that didn’t include them.

At Adopt A Golden Atlanta, we step in when they have nowhere else to go, offering urgent medical care, loving foster homes, and a path to forever. Behind every wagging tail is a team of people just like you: volunteers who show up with open hearts, ready to make a difference.

Whether you're walking a new intake, organizing an event, answering emails or organizing data from your kitchen table, or helping a senior Golden find comfort in their final years, you are the reason we can say yes when a dog needs us most.

Together, we are turning heartbreak into hope - one Golden at a time.

Turning Your Dog into a Daily Wellness Partner

Dogs have an incredible ability to uplift our spirits, create joy, and bring a sense of companionship into our lives. However, they can also play an essential role in our overall wellness. By integrating your pet into your daily routine, you can enhance your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. In this article, we’ll explore how to turn your furry friend into a daily wellness partner, fostering a lifestyle that benefits both you and your beloved companion.

Daily Exercise with Your Pet

One of the most significant advantages of pet ownership is the opportunity for daily exercise. Dogs, in particular, require regular walks, which can help pet owners maintain a consistent exercise routine. But even if you have a cat or a smaller pet, you can incorporate movement into your day.

Recent Adoptions!

šŸ’› September Was Full of Golden Moments!

September was bursting with heartwarming new beginnings! From shy seniors to bouncy puppies, each Golden who came through our doors this month found the perfect family waiting for them.

Take a peek at a few of our favorite adoption stories from August, you might just smile as big as we did!

🐾 Emma

Little Emma came to AGA as a stray from South Georgia and tested positive for heartworms. A longtime volunteer and her husband stepped up to take her through treatment, giving her the loving home she needed. Now heartworm-free, Emma enjoys swimming in the pool, playing with her Golden sister, vacationing at the beach, and basking in endless toys and cuddles. From stray to beach vacations, Emma is so loved!

🐾 Beau

Three-year-old Beau came to AGA after his family made the difficult decision to surrender him due to resource guarding, ensuring their small children stayed safe. Beau’s new family, experienced and dog-savvy, fell in love with him instantly! Now he enjoys long walks, playtime in a fenced yard, and plenty of snuggles with his new family. Welcome home, Beau!

🐾 Gracie

Sweet 2-year-old Gracie was rescued by a local shelter before finding her way to AGA. Her new family, still grieving the loss of their beloved Golden, opened their hearts to her, and it’s a perfect match. With her gentle demeanor, Gracie may even become a therapy dog one day! She’s thriving in her new home, going on car rides, and filling her family’s hearts with joy.

🐾 Poopsie (now Poppy)

One-year-old Poppy, a Golden/Standard Poodle mix, came to AGA when her owner’s work schedule left little time for her. After a loving foster helped her prepare for her next chapter, she met her new family, who had been caring for their son’s Golden and decided they needed one of their own! Poppy quickly won over their dog, Reggie, and now enjoys Beltline walks, plenty of company, and being the family’s ā€œeasy-goingā€ jackpot.

🐾 Barney (now Milo)

One-year-old Barney was found as a stray and came to AGA when no one claimed him. This happy, squeaky-toy-loving boy quickly charmed his foster family and soon met his forever family, who had recently lost their dog. Now named Milo, he has parents who work from home, a big fenced yard for fetch, and daily walks and hikes. Milo is loving every moment of his new life!

🐾 Scarlet

Scarlet came to AGA in terrible condition with a severe neck wound and heartworms, but her Golden spirit never dimmed. After receiving medical care, she started a foster-to-adopt journey with previous AGA adopters, and it was love at first sight. Now officially adopted, Scarlet has a mom who works from home, a dad who dotes on her, and even a beach vacation under her belt (where she met a crab friend!). Scarlet will never know pain again, only love.

These stories are a testament to the power of rescue and the incredible families who open their hearts to dogs in need. Thank you to our adopters, fosters, volunteers, and supporters who make these happy endings possible!

Orphan of the Month:

Rasta

Hey there, I’m Rasta, a big, lovable 5-year-old Flat-Coated Retriever with a heart as wide as my goofy grin. Life threw me a curveball when I ended up as an unclaimed stray at the DeKalb County Animal Shelter, but thankfully, AGA stepped in and gave me the second chance I’ve been dreaming of. The shelter staff called me sweet, gentle, and great with other dogs (but I haven’t met any with my foster family yet).

Now that I’m in a foster home, I’m thriving! I’m house trained, have excellent kitchen manners (no counter surfing or begging from me!), and I don’t need a crate, I have free rein of the house, and I’ve been a perfect gentleman. I haven’t tried to climb on furniture, but sometimes I’ll gently place my paws on the bed and look at you like, ā€œCan I, pretty please?ā€

I walk well on a leash, though I do like to strut my stuff at a fast pace and might pull a bit when I’m excited. I’m a playful, energetic guy who loves people and really just wants to be part of the family fun. I would do best as an only dog as I just love my people too much to share them… but I have been told I’m cat-friendly!

I’d love a home where someone is around often, who can help me stay active and shower me with love (and maybe a few belly rubs). And while I’m generally laid back, I will admit, vet visits aren’t exactly my favorite thing. I’d just rather be outside playing fetch or hanging with my people! I’m just a big-hearted boy looking to fill your days with love, loyalty, and tail wags.

If you think we could be a match, let me know. I would love to meet you! Love, Rasta

Check Your Dog

Once a Month on the 14th!

Facts about Cancer

in Dogs

Did you know that 1 in 3 dogs will be diagnosed with cancer? 50% of those dogs will die from cancer. In humans, there are 1.5 million new cases of cancer each year, but in dogs, there are 6 million new cases of cancer diagnosed each year. Dog cancer prevention is key to a long healthy life with your dog.

Checking your dog once a month for lumps and bumps or any abnormal behavior is key in the prevention of any health issue with your dog.

We recommend doing it on the 14th of every month. Monthly checks mean extra pets and love for your dogs while bringing peace of mind to you! If you are starting with a young dog, this time will also prepare them for their future vet wellness visits.

Now, how exactly do you do this?

Start at their nose and work all the way to their tail. Make sure you are in a familiar, low-key environment where you and your pet can do this without distraction. In other words, not during dinner time or when you expect the mailman to be buzzing by the house.

Also, make sure you keep a journal of each of your

Check Your Dog days so you will have notes to

compare with should something arise.
