FMIG Earns National Award
Congratulations to UMMC's Family Medicine Interest Group chapter, who earned one of only nine national awards in July from the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).
AAFP hosted the Family Medicine Interest Group Program of Excellence Awards and the University of Mississippi's chapter was recognized for Honorable Mention for Community Service.
Charlie Dean (pictured here), M4 and FMIG member, traveled to Kansas City to accept the award on the chapter's behalf. Dean was awarded the MAFP's Travel Scholarship which reimburses expenses for a student to attend a national family medicine conference.

Students Play Important Part at MAFP Annual Meeting in Destin
Ten medical students served as MAFP Student Ambassadors this past summer, going on a 5-day trip in July to the MAFP Annual Meeting in Destin, FL. The trip enabled them to network with practicing family physicians, clinics, and residency programs.
The Ambassadors provided invaluable help to MAFP staff - they prepared for events, worked a booth in the exhibit hall, and sold Draw Down tickets. They also had free time to go to the beach, shop, and eat in Destin.
Ambassadors attended education sessions about CBD Oil and even met with Dr. John Cullen of Valdez, Alaska, President of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Residents Get Education Hours, Network in Destin
Eight family medicine residents representing all four Mississippi residency programs attended the MAFP Annual Meeting in July in Destin, FL. They took part in continuing education sessions, networked with potential employers, and enjoyed free time in Destin. To encourage residents to attend, MAFP offers them a discount on registration fees.
Dr. Moumita Biswas, PGY-3 from EC HealthNet, attended as the winner of the 2019
Dewitt G. Crawford Scholarship
, given to an outstanding resident each year.

Family Medicine Resident Earns UMMC Gold Humanism Honor Society Membership
Michael Yeung-Lai-Wah, PGY-3 with University of Mississippi Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program, was honored recently with membership in the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS).
Established in 2005, the UMMC chapter inducts 25 new members annually to the GHHS, which recognizes medical students, residents and faculty who are exemplars of humanistic patient care and who can serve as role models, mentors and leaders in medicine.
Dr. Yeung-Lai-Wah is currently a resident board member for MAFP. "This is a really big honor for me," Yeung said of his induction to GHHS. I guess it's verification that I'm doing something right."
