Impact Report: Celebrating 30 Years!

2023 marks the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation's 30th year in serving as a catalyst for philanthropy & community impact for credit unions and a support arm to ensure our small credit unions can succeed. Over the last six years, the Foundation has distributed nearly $10 million in funding in areas like disaster relief, hardship assistance, educational programs & grants, academic & needs-based scholarships and non-profit grant support!


We are especially thankful for our 2022 Operational Supporters, 2022 Program Supporters and the leadership of our Board of Directors for making last year our most sucessful year yet! You are encouraged to share in the Foundation's many accomplishments in 2022 from our Impact Report.

FREE Exploring Why Workshop

Virtual - May 23 -25, 9:00 - 11:00 am daily

The Carolinas Credit Union Foundation has partnered with the National Credit Union Foundation to bring a FREE development opportunity to credit union professionals in the Carolinas. The National Foundation’s Exploring Why™ is an experiential training program to support and engage employees through connecting to the credit union difference and discovering new and improved ways to drive value for their members and credit unions.


Exploring Why is intended for all credit union employees regardless of tenure. The training program will be held virtually over Zoom in 2-hour sessions over three days. There is no cost to attend but advance registration is required.

Cooperation Among Cooperatives

A delegation of the African Confederation of Cooperative Savings and Credit Union Associations (ACCOSCA) toured the Raleigh/Durham, NC area April 3-6, connecting with host credit unions on topics of innovation, technology, the regulatory landscape, governance, and more.

Scholarships Available: CUsTogether

The CUsTogether Conferences are slated for May and September of this year, offering credit union professionals networking and development opportunities at the Kingston Plantation in Myrtle Beach! The Foundation is honored to be the recipient of the conferences' proceeds amounting to more than $50,000 since the event was started in 2019.


New this year, the Foundation is offering scholarships for credit union professionals with a goal to support an emerging leader. Stronger consideration will be given to those unable to attend because of budgetary concerns. Scholarships available include:


$1,250 for the Employees Conference = $500 registration +$750 towards accommodations & travel (Due April 26, 2023 - THIS FRIDAY!)


$1,550 for the Leadership Conference = $800 registration +$750 towards accommodations & travel (Due August 30, 2023)

Development Issues Workshop

The Carolinas Foundation in collaboration with the Credit Union Development Educators in the Carolinas are bringing back the learning workshop focused on development issues. The National Credit Union Foundation has identified 12 Development Issues that are interconnected and act as barriers to the well-being and prosperity of members and communities served by credit unions. Once we understand these issues and their impact to our members’ lives, we can begin to solve for them.


After the sucess of last year's workshop with more than 80 attendees, the Foundation is excited to again offer this workshop to any credit union employee or industry partner committed to increasing the impact of social responsibility efforts and financial well-being initiatives. 


Save the date: The 2023 Development Issues Workshop is scheduled for October 3 - 4 in North Augusta, SC with registration opening in the Summer. The Foundation is appreciative of the support of SRP Federal Credit Union who is helping to host the event at the SRP Park. Principles & Philosophy Conference to Explore the CU Difference

Registration has opened for the 13th annual Principles & Philosophy Conference set for October 24-26 at the Caraway Conference Center in Sophia, NC. Credit union staff and volunteers will gather to learn and explore cooperative philosophy and the social purpose of credit unions. Produced in partnership with the League, Foundation and Credit Union Development Educators, this unique interactive and experiential event is always a sell-out. Scholarships are available for CUs under $100M!

NEW Grants Available for Small CUs

The Foundation has added several new opportunities to its growing list of grants for small credit unions under $100M in assets. In addition to the recent $9,000 in professional development grants awarded in February and $7,350 in FiCEP grants awarded last month, the Hamilton Grant program has expanded to included several new additions:


Southeast Small Credit Union Conference, September 10-12 in Huntsville, Alabama. Two grants are available to cover conference fees and travel. (Deadline of June 9 to apply).


Performance Pros Consulting is offering the opportunity for 10 credit unions to receive a discounted on-site visit with for loan policy review and frontline coaching to increase loan growth. (Available year-round). 


The League’s TalentGuided Program includes two grant packages available for $2,000 toward executive coaching or $1,000 toward business coaching. (Available year-round with limited funding).

Chapter Grants Continue Supporting

Local Non-Profits

The Northwest Chapter held a fundraiser, “Bingo with a Cause" for Open Arms Community, a small non-profit in Winston-Salem. Including the matching donation of $1,150 from the Foundation, a total of $2,300 was presented to the organization.

The Tarheel Chapter raised funds through donations made online by employees of credit unions in its Chapter for the Children's Home Society of NC. Including a matching donation of $2,500 from the Foundation, a total of $6,624 was presented to the organization.

Whaley Honored with Leadership Award

Carolinas Credit Union Foundation President Lauren Whaley was recognized with the 2023 Eugene H. Farley League Leadership Award by the American Association of Credit Union Leagues (AACUL) at reception held in conjunction with the 2023 CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference in late February. The award honors a league executive who demonstrates visionary leadership at the state and national levels. Read more here >>

SAVE THE DATE: Carolinas Cup 2023

After the tremendous sucess of the Carolinas Cup in 2022, CUNA Mutual is excited to announce that the 19th Annual Carolinas Cup will move to the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, NC and will include a special visit and tour of Victory Junction! This friendly tournament between North and South Carolina has raised more than a $1 million for Victory Junction since the tournament began 18 years ago.

The Carolinas Credit Union Foundation was incorporated in 1993 as a charitable organization dedicated to the embodiment of the “people helping people” philosophy of credit unions. Its mission is to empower and inspire credit unions in the Carolinas through collaborative opportunities to enrich our communities. The Foundation serves as a founding partner to Victory Junction, a year-round camping facility, located in Randleman, NC, for children with chronic medical conditions or serious illnesses. Over the last 16 years, more than $5 million has been raised by credit unions in the Carolinas to support its camp and outreach programs. The Foundation also serves as a partner in philanthropy with credit unions, assisting charitable giving through donor-advised funds, managing scholarship programs, supporting small credit unions with professional development grants, and aiding disaster relief for the local, national, and global credit union communities.
