Frescobaldi Remole 2022

Frescobaldi Remole is like that old pair of shoes that is your go-to when you want a time-honored comfortable experience that is not flashy but you keep coming back to time and time again. Remole is a very old friend that goes way back for me. An absolute must for any wine list I have written as an introduction to Tuscan wines. In my salesmen years, it was a reliable floor stack that flew out the door. And as a store wine manager, it was always a go-to wine to suggest for an affordable Tuscan red. Remole is a reliable and consistent value with no baggage. Imagine our jubilation when we were offered a great price on this wine for the new vintage. I know most of our wine staff will be bringing home a case for their own house wine.

The Marchesi de' Frescobaldi is one of Italy's oldest wineries, dating to the 1300s. The family has included medieval knights, bankers, lawyers, and patrons of the arts. Originating in Florence, they were initially part of the rise of the Florentine banking industry and played an essential role in the political and economic life of Florence. Their influence was widespread. They financed the wars for English Kings Edward I and II and were given the title 'Treasurers to the English Crown,' and were responsible for collecting the custom taxes from all English ports. The Frescobaldi's first estate in 1300 was Tenuta di Castiglioni, located southwest of Florence, considered the wrong side of Florence. In response, they commissioned the first bridge to be built across the river Arno, Santa Trinita Bridge, which still stands today. As does the Church they built, Basilica of Santo Spirito, designed by Brunelleschi – the famous architect of the Florence Cathedral.

From the start, the Frescobaldi's demanded very high standards for their wines which developed an early reputation as the best wine from Tuscany. By the early 1400's Renaissance artists, Donatello and Michelozzo Michelozzi were among famous clients. Some, at the time, were not so famous, and Michelangelo traded paintings for Frescobaldi wines. In the 1500s, Frescobaldi wines were served at the Papal Courts and the tables of King Henry VIII of England. Their reputation continued unabashed, and 700 years later are still considered one of the best in Italy with products such as Ornelaia, Luce, Nipozzano, and Pomino. Today the Frescobaldi family owns 11 estates in Italy, including 10 in Tuscany, responsible for the biggest wine-producing operation in Tuscany and one of the most important in Italy.

Remole is a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon from the Toscana IGT wine affiliation. They are produced from fruit throughout the Frescobaldi estates and other Tuscan areas. The varieties of its soils provide the subtle complexities of the wine taste. In some parts of Tuscany, the soils are clay-like, with other places having a sandier type. Generally, the well-drained and rich soil brings the best grapes to Tuscany. Harvesters picked the grapes by hand at the end of September. After picking them, they do a gentle pressing, and fermentation is accomplished with natural yeast in temperature controlled tanks at 82°F. The finished wine is matured in stainless steel tanks for five months and a further two months in a bottle before release.

From the Winery

Behind every Frescobaldi wine lies the passion of agronomists and oenologists, who know their vineyards and terroirs down to the finest detail. Their art of creating quality wines requires the iron rule of respect. Respect for tradition, which guide them, even in the midst of innovation or avant-garde solutions. Respect for Tuscany, the living land, to be cultivated in harmony and serenity. Respect for each individual terroir, born of a unique combination of soil, altitude, and microclimate, each giving us a wine with its own matchless personality.

The Sangiovese vines destined for Remole Rosso awoke from their winter rest in mid-April when the warm sunny days allowed the buds to germinate perfectly evenly. From the last ten days of May, the vineyards were enveloped in the delicate fragrance of the newly opened corollas: flowering was particularly favored by dry, warm days. This climate characterized the entire summer until veraison. The rain in mid-August refreshed the plants, thus allowing the grapes to reach an optimal ripening curve, an essential prerequisite for a 2022 harvest of excellent quality.

Remole Rosso 2022 has a beautiful purple-red color. On the nose, it manifests itself with its fruity character, with intense hints of red and black fruits, small berries such as blueberry, blackcurrant, raspberry, and ripe fruits such as plum and cherry. It has a rare and delicate scent of wild arbutus. Liquorice and cardamom define the spicy and balsamic character of Remole Rosso. Pleasant on the palate, with a fine persistence and taste-olfactory response. The tannic texture is solid but very smooth.

This Week's Wine Insider Offer

Frescobaldi Remole 2022

I tried this wine with our group of interested wine geeks. We all know the wine, but sometimes a wine fades into the background when you try so many new wines. But in revisiting this wine with the new vintage, I remembered why this wine always brings back such good memories. Deep ruby red color, big dark berry aromas with a bit of spice. Moderate weight on the palate, lush fruit flavors, blackberry, cassis, plum, a little cola, and leather. A good tannic backbone and moderated acids keep the fruit dancing. The finish is long dark cherry. We all decided this fills that niche of wine to have on hand as a great house wine. And because we got this wine at the beginning of the vintage, they gave us a silly price so that we could offer it to you at a fantastic discount. No rebates, no QR codes, just a straight-case sale. Stock up now while you can. I know I did.
