Our own museum historian, Charles Hinman, was featured this month in a front page story of Hawaiiâs newspaper, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser for his tireless efforts in connecting with families of lost submariners.
Charles runs the memorial website www.OnEternalPatrol.com, which maintains pages and profiles of lost American submariners. He has worked closely with the families of over 4,000 lost submariners across generations, including descendants of the WWII-era USS Herring submarine wreck recently identified by the U.S. Navy.
Interviewed by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Hinman said, âWe find anyone who is a relative of a man who was lost in a submarine, not only in World War II, but from 1900 to present. For many relatives, especially those who knew the missing submariner, we have assisted in bringing some closure. Even providing the verified location of a loved oneâs resting place can offer some peace after years of uncertainty.â
