As the days move us inexorably toward the November presidential election, all the polls promise an extremely competitive race. In this presidential election it is especially important for voters to have their voices heard and for every vote to be counted. Each of us has a right to exercise and a responsibility to fulfill.

Would you like to help the League develop a comprehensive handbook of local elected and appointed officials? Who represents you in local government, school districts, municipal departments? Get to know your town while helping the League identify resources and responsible parties.

Grapevine

News from your League committees. You are always welcome to join or just virtually sit in. Committees are now connecting via Zoom and other online video conferencing services; check with your committee chair for meeting status and to learn more about this easy way to join with others virtually. Committee membership is both rewarding and fun, and it does the good work for which the League is known.

Unit meetings take place in smaller virtual settings to empower, encourage, inform, and uplift. Come join the Units each month except for June, July, August, and December. Contact Unit Chairs for meeting details.

Book Corner: Hidden Figures

The book that spawned the film tells the story of the Black women who performed the computations that advanced aeronautics from World War II warplanes to the orbital calculations that guide human spaceflight—despite enduring the oppression of Jim Crow and its racist aftermath.
Affordable Housing Basics
Details of November’s planned Thursday with the League, which will focus on affordable housing with speakers from different perspectives of government, development, and supportive services.

Voter Hotline Volunteers Needed
Hotline Number: (626) 798-0965
The Voter Hotline will be operational from October 24 to November 2, 2:00–7:00 p.m. Phone coverage on November 3, Election Day, will be from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Volunteers will receive virtual training. The training is designed to ensure that volunteers are sufficiently skilled at navigating several websites to accurately answer voters’ questions. Volunteers must have access to internet connectivity and a desktop, laptop, or smartphone to navigate the various websites easily and reliably. Available Zoom training dates are:
Monday, October 19, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Tuesday, October 20, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Tuesday, October 20, 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Volunteers need attend only one training session and will work from home using phones provided by the League. Please email voterservices@lwv-pa.org by Thursday, October 1, to volunteer. Subject: Voter Hotline. Volunteers will then be asked to sign up for a training date and select their shifts.
