PRINCIPAL'S LETTER

This week's guest writer is John Nelson,

a school parent and current School Commission member.

Dear Friends,

As a Saint Pats parent since 2011, I am constantly reminded about the strength of our community and the deep fulfillment that comes from being a part of this school. I'm typically reminded in predictable ways—the early morning chats with other parents at drop-off, the excitement I see in the children when it's "donut" Friday, and the fun (and occasional thorn-produced pain) that comes through volunteering during events like "hedge fest." Yet, the unpredictable moments sometimes serve as the best reminders of how great the Saint Pats community is.

As one of the coaches for the middle school cross-country team, I have the pleasure of seeing teens and tweens push themselves to their limits. I also have the pleasure of trying to convince the same group that (1) running is fun (or at least more fun than watching Taylor Swift-inspired reels on TikTok) and (2) the pain they are feeling is personal growth. In September, Saint Pats competed in its first cross-country meet of the year in (predictably) windy, wet weather. While standing at the starting line, the middle school girls were experiencing a cocktail of emotions: excitement, stress, and intimidation. Phrases like "I feel sick," "This race needs to start ASAP," and "There are TOO many hills on this course" echoed from the team. Out of nowhere, in a simple yet profound fashion, the girls broke out into an unplanned Our Father. I don't know which girls led the prayer, but the entire team was engaged within seconds. A sea change commenced, and shortly after that, I heard words like "We've got this" and "Let's go!"

As the girls made their way across the finish line, I was reminded about what a gift it is to be part of this community—one guided by God's love. Just as scores of parents, guardians, parishioners, and students have done for decades, we must continue to cultivate the treasure that is the Saint Pats community. Indeed, as beautifully explained by Mother Teresa, "If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other."

Thank you for supporting the Annual Fund. Our goal is $250,000 and 100% participation by October 31.

The Annual Fund Participation Contest continues. It's an excellent opportunity to come together and celebrate participation. The first class to reach 100% participation wins a pizza party.

Disaster & Emergency Kits

Your support is essential in keeping our school prepared. September was Emergency Preparedness Month, October is Fire Prevention Month, and staff are getting trained. Their most recent professional development was about Emergency Preparedness and Protecting God's Children. The training started in the classroom and moved outside to set up mock evacuation and search and rescue teams and command centers.

Classroom Disaster Kits

Help us prepare for unexpected emergencies by contributing to our teacher disaster kits. We need the following to complete our classroom disaster kits. Donations can be dropped off in the school office.

Student Emergency Preparedness Kits

If you still need to bring in your student's emergency kit, please do so as soon as possible. By working together, we can ensure that every member of our school is well-prepared for unexpected situations.

In-Parish Tuition

If you are a registered parishioner at Saint Patrick or Holy Cross Catholic Church, your Stewardship Card for the 2024-2025 calendar year will be in the mail soon.

To receive in-parish tuition at re-enrollment for the next academic year, you must be a registered member of either parish, have a Stewardship Card on file, and be an active and tithing member of the Parish.

Pushpay — New Parish Online Giving Platform

Thank you for your consistent giving to our parish. We are grateful for your continued generosity and are excited to announce a new way to give. We value our parish community and want to ensure everyone knows about our new giving platform.

We are moving away from Our Sunday Visitor (OSV) Online Giving and EFT services. We have chosen to contract with Pushpay. We strive to be good stewards of your financial gifts and believe the significantly lower processing fees offered through Pushpay will allow your gift of treasure to support our parishes' mission further. As always, security is a top priority. 

We aim to complete this transition process to Pushpay by November 1, so we need your help moving your current OSV Online Giving and EFT gifts.

If you currently donate online (via OSV), please click on the INSTRUCTIONS button below to set up your recurring gift through Pushpay and cancel your donation through OSV.

EFT

If you currently donate through EFT (donations processed via the Parish Office at Saint Patrick Parish), please follow the instructions below to set up your recurring gift through Pushpay. Then, email Michelle Carpenter to stop your EFT donations.

Envelopes

If you currently donate using envelopes at Mass, please consider donating online and setting up an account in Pushpay by clicking the PUSHPAY button below.

Trunk or Treat

Join us for games, crafts, costume contests, and candy at our annual Trunk or Treat!

This is a free event. Bring a non-perishable food donation to the St. Leo Food Connection to enter the costume contest. This month's greatest need is single-serve oatmeal packets.

Volunteer to support the event and earn commitment hours. Trunks are needed— there is space for 25!

Enjoy Recess with Students

Are you looking for a fun way to earn commitment hours? Volunteers are needed to help supervise recess. Surround yourself with happy little people while helping to keep them safe.

Volunteers must have completed Virtus Safe Environment. Go to the EVENTS tab in Track it Forward to sign up.

Track It Forward

Saint Patrick Catholic School has adopted a volunteer hour management program. With Track It Forward, you can log in, sign up to volunteer, select the event you volunteered at, enter your volunteer hours, or view your dashboard and see how many required hours you have volunteered.

Safe Environment Training

All adults must complete the Virtus Training to volunteer at Saint Patrick Catholic School.

Adult volunteer requirements include

• Background check completed on or before the first day of service and every three years while in active service.
• Abuse prevention initial training is completed within 30 days of starting service, and refresher training is every three years while in active service.
• Policies are read and signed on or before the first day of service. 

If you have finished the initial training, please log into your account to ensure you are up to date with the background check and all modules!

Tuition Affordability

It's our goal that no child be denied the opportunity to attend Saint Patrick Catholic School because their family can't afford it. We are committed to doing all we can by offering fair and substantial tuition assistance packages.

Fulcrum and Saint Patrick Tuition Assistance Program use a common application called FACTS. Complete the form once to be considered for the Fulcrum TAP and the SPTAP.

The tuition assistance application for current and prospective families and supporting documents for the 2024-2025 academic year are open and must be submitted by December 31, 2023

Candy Contest

Bring candy to school—yes, we said that! The homeroom classes with the largest candy haul for Trunk or Treat win an ice cream party.

So far, 304 total pounds of candy have been collected. Mrs. Sachwitz's second-grade class has the lead with 58 lbs. We are grateful for the students who have helped carry the candy down three flights of stairs and to the ones making morning announcements about the standings.

Middle school students can use the space and supplies in the Art Room as their studio to develop their skills with a particular medium or to explore something new.

Art Studio is a free drop-in activity! You don't need to register. Art Specialist Mrs. Emily Keller will help students with their independent work most weeks. A unique project is planned for once a month.

Homework Support Hour for grades 5-8

Need help with homework? Sign up for support. Space is limited to 20 students. Sign-ups are required in advance, one week at a time.

Students go directly to Mr. Ainslie's room after school. Mrs. Paez will help students and ensure they are on task.

Spirit Wear Friday

Every Friday is Spirit Wear Friday. We love seeing students wearing their Spirit Wear favorites, from t-shirts to sweatshirts!

Students can wear Spirit Wear tops with their uniform bottoms or regular uniforms.

Lunch Orders

The lunch program, catered by Love My Lunch, offers three daily choices, including snack and drink add-ons.

Each regular-size meal is $5.75 plus tax and includes fruit, vegetables, and a side item. Larger meals are more. Additional snacks and drinks, priced individually, are also available.

Basketball for Middle School Boys

Registration is open! The season runs from October 23 - December 22. Games are after school during the week. Practice is in the Saint Patrick Catholic School Skip Butler Gymnasium during the week and some weekends.

Sports Physicals

All athletes must have an updated sports physical on file at Saint Patrick Catholic School to participate in Middle School Athletics. Turn in forms before the first practice. Physicals are good for 24 months and can be submitted by email or dropped off in person at the school office.

Volunteer

Are you interested in coaching, serving as the team photographer, or in another capacity? Volunteering counts toward fulfilling the required commitment hours for the 2023-2024 school year! Email athletics@saintpats.org to get started.

Sports Physicals for Middle Schoolers

All 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade athletes must have an updated physical on file at Saint Patrick Catholic School to participate in Middle School Athletics, including Volleyball and Cross Country.

Forms should be turned in before the first practice. Physicals are good for 24 months, so get yours early.

Completed physical forms can be submitted via email to Marla Petronzio at school@saintpats.org or can be dropped off in person in the School Office.

St. Leo Food Connection 

In October, we're collecting oatmeal, ideally in single serving sizes, to support the St. Leo Food Connection Backpack Program, serving over 1,200 students weekly at schools in Tacoma, Lakewood, and Puyallup.

Backpacks contain at least two days of easy-to-access food, such as oatmeal packets, instant soups, fresh fruits, and vegetables, so students can come to school nourished and ready to learn after the weekend.

Looking ahead, the following are needed in single-serving sizes:

• November | Snack bars like Chewy Granola Nutri-Grain, Nature Valley
• December | Crackers like Ritz, Cheez-It, Goldfish
• January | Fruit cups
• February | Instant grits
• March | Fruit leather and dried fruit like raisins, Craisins, apples, mango, pineapple

October is the month of the Holy Rosary. ShamFams assembled pocket rosaries during their time together. We're preparing to pray the Living Rosary as a school later this month.

Incorporating opportunities for older and younger Shamrocks to interact and collaborate through mentoring programs, buddy systems, and cross-grade projects creates a richer and more supportive educational environment for all students involved.

We now know that COVID-19 is here to stay for the foreseeable future. Understanding how to live our lives while keeping ourselves, loved ones, and the community as safe as possible is essential. How can we do that?
