September 2024
Seventeen years ago, the Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative (CTSC) was established with a clear mission: to serve as a catalyst for high-quality clinical and translational science and transformative research, ultimately enhancing the health of individuals in Northern Ohio and beyond. Over these years, we have educated, inspired, and supported hundreds of researchers, programs, and innovative ideas, turning them into impactful realities. We extend our sincere gratitude to all our collaborators, partners, and members who have contributed to our mission and continue to drive our efforts forward. We look forward to advancing our collective goals for many years to come.

Joining together with NEOMED and the University of Toledo.
With new partnerships, an expansion of our collaborative efforts go beyond Greater Cleveland into Northern Ohio, and with a strategic emphasis on health equity, the CTSC is poised for its next chapter. Our new partners offer enhanced opportunities to advance workforce development in rural medicine and support vulnerable populations, further strengthening our world-class team of researchers who are committed to accelerating the delivery of treatments to more people.

#2 - Community Engaged Research
|
Community engaged mentoring and workforce development of community workers.
Mentoring is a key component to the successful development of all academic investigators. This program will work with early-stage investigators (ESI) and/or those new to community engaged research to amplify their skills in conducting this important research. This program will
meaningfully increase the number of proficient investigators in this important and growing sector
of translational science. Learn more about our Community Engaged Research initiatives.

Designed to help jumpstart your research journey, Pilot Funding can help develop a project to the point where external funding can be obtained.
Former Annual Pilot Awardee (and CTSC KL2 Scholar), Shanina C. Knighton, PhD, RN, CIC states that: "my CTSC pilot grant was instrumental in helping me to further my technology-based intervention and to obtain pilot data. In many ways the KL2 funding and the pilot grant helped me to work through how I would manage an interdisciplinary team as a PI once I earned my first R01. This was a major stepping stone that subsequently led to the success of my first federally-funded R01." Applications for the CTSC Annual Pilot Program are now open. Register to attend a technical webinar on September 24, 2024 at 3:00PM to learn more.

Informatics is critical for the successful capture, management, analysis, and interpretation of clinical and translational data.
Our partner, University Hospitals, recently transitioned to a unified EPIC EHR in conjunction with their TriNetX access. Additionally, MetroHealth is using Epic for research within their hospital system. MetroHealth was also involved in helping Epic think about Epic for research from a “big data” perspective. Join us virtually on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 from 12:00PM - 1:00PM for the "CTSC Quarterly Big Data Webinar: Epic Cosmos Database Basics". Save the date: 'CTSC Informatics Cosmos Data-thon' - Saturday, December 7, 2024.

#5 - T32 Postdoctoral Support
|
The CTSC T32 grant-supported Clinical and Translational Scientist Training Program for Postdoctoral Researchers.
Under the direction of Jim Spilsbury, PhD, MPH, the T32 Training Program aims to develop clinical and translational scientists with skills for interdisciplinary work, ability to work across disciplines, and ability to envision and design advances in clinical and community settings.
| |
#6 - R25 Research Education Support
|
Helping youth think of research as a career.
Led by Drs. Ron Hickman and Daryl Thornton, the INSPIRE-US program seeks to provide education activities that complement or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nation’s biomedical, behavioral, & clinical needs. This is the very first 10-week summer program designed to promote greater diversity in clinical and translational science by providing an intensive education in translational research for underrepresented racial minority (URM) undergraduates.
| |
#7 - Diversifying Study Engagement
|
We are working hard to identify the fundamental barriers to optimal recruitment of underrepresented groups in clinical trials.
With the use of the UH Mobile Research Unit, we are able to bring the research to new populations. Investigators can apply for a voucher or Core Utilization Pilot to use the MRU to assist in your recruitment strategies. Click here to submit a SPARCRequest for the MRU.

#8 - Promoting Health Equity
|
Fully integrating community collaborators and partners to ensure that our research results in health improvements for all.
Our READI programming involves collaborating with community organizations like HOLA Ohio, Haus of Transcendent, and the Northeast Ohio Black Health Coalition. Signature events such as the Black Maternal Health Equity Summit, the Health Equity Challenge Series, and other events, workshops, and health screenings help advance access to health interventions that aim to promote health equity.
| |
#9 - Dissemination & Implementation
|
Join us virtually for the Dissemination & Implementation Symposium on Friday, October 18, 2024.
This conference will aim to enhance understanding of D&I Science principles and their application in both practice and research. It will cover topics such as operational and community alignment, implementing for equity, and measuring implementation cost. Register for the symposium today!
| |
#10 - Education & Training
|
We are continually crafting inclusive and high impact educational training programs for translational research professionals of all disciplines and levels.
Our first Advanced Translational Leadership in Academic Science (ATLAS) program concluded this September. The opportunity to collaborate among CTSC partnering institutions enabled investigators to build on established skills to more effectively lead team science and work toward common goals.
| |
#11 - Themed Pilot Awards
|
Ten pilot grants with awards up to $20,000 were presented for 2024.
Requests were submitted for pilot research funding to increase diversity in clinical trials and enhance community engagement by addressing barriers to clinical trial participation. Learn more about the awarded 2024 READI Themed Pilot projects. Our next round of Themed Pilots will surround the centralized theme of Integrative Medicine.

#12 - Funding that Translates
|
Focused research on underrepresented farming communities.
Dr. Maeve MacMurdo is a specialist in occupational and environmental lung disease, and director of the Cleveland Clinic Occupational Lung Disease Clinic. Dr. MacMurdo is passionate about understanding how the environment impacts worker health, with a focus on the health of farmworkers. With pilot funding from the CTSC, she is working to evaluate the impacts of air pollution on lung health in addition to helping develop guidelines for the evaluation and prevention of occupational exposure to air pollution, focusing on farmworker health.
