Happy National Physicians’ Day!

From our team to all physicians, happy National Physicians’ Day. At Doctors Manitoba, we are inspired by our members every day, and that fuels our work to strengthen and support the whole physician, so every physician and medical learner has the support they need to thrive.

In celebration, please take a few minutes to see these messages of gratitude, a new video, and learn about our theme this year, celebrating the diversity and the expertise of doctors in Manitoba.

Election Outcome for Health Care

A busy week in politics has passed, and we have a summary of what it might mean for physicians and health care. The Liberals formed a minority government. While the U.S. tariff threat and affordability were top issues, this election showed that health care was also a big talker. See what the Liberals promised on health care, plus the outcome of the PC leadership race here in Manitoba.

Connection in a HeartBeat

HeartBeat 2025 was a rhythm of connection, compassion, and reflection last week at the Fort Garry Hotel, with over 100 members attending. See part one of our recap this week from the event, including a fireside chat with Dr. Lisa Monkman and Premier Kinew, new actions to help improve equity and belonging for all physicians, and the next steps on historical research about past oppression, discrimination, and harm within the medical profession.

Plus, we are excited to unveil a new photo showing the face of the medical profession today, compared to 100 years ago.

BILLING UPDATE

Billing for Lysis Adhesions

Manitoba Health has published a new billing bulletin which provides billing instructions for lysis of adhesions. The 2023 PSA included new fee tariffs for this service and members should review to ensure they are billing appropriately. More information can be found here. HEALTH SYSTEM UPDATES

This week’s health systems updates include:

  • A new ER Strategy was released just a few hours ago by the provincial government. We know Manitoba has had many ER strategies over the last few decades, so we are carefully reviewing this one to learn more. See our summary here, and please do send us your feedback. Learn more here.
  • Measles updates for Manitoba and across Canada, plus advice for physicians and patients. Learn more here.
  • Surgical Robot Debuts: This week, Manitoba's first surgical robot was unveiled at HSC, a minimally invasive device that aims to support better patient care and outcomes and puts Manitoba at the cutting edge of surgical innovation. Learn more here.
  • Team Mapping in Primary Care. Check out this month’s AIM update, focusing on an approach that can help primary care clinics build higher-functioning teams. Team-based care is the future, and this is a great help as we move forward.
  • A distressing assault happened this week at Brandon Hospital, where a nurse was violently attacked by a patient. We are deeply troubled to hear about more violence in health facilities, which should be a safe place for patients and providers. We are monitoring closely.
  • Debbie’s Law is gaining traction at the Legislature. The opposition Progressive Conservatives introduced a bill they call Debbie’s Law, which would require the health system to share more information with cardiac surgery patients. This includes when life-saving care cannot be provided within medically recommended time frames, out-of-province care options when waits in Manitoba are too long, and reporting of all patient deaths linked to healthcare delays for life-saving procedures of their priority level, wait time benchmark, and expected surgery date. The law passed second reading at the legislature, which is not common for opposition or private members bills.
