Our Students Facilitate Important Conversations
for National Day of Racial Healing
|
|
150 middle-school students, teachers, and volunteers from the Academy of the Americas, Paul Robeson/Malcolm X Academy, and Hillel Day School participated in a half-day conference that included a performance by the WSU Freedom Players and virtual breakout sessions where they discussed their thoughts regarding racism, how to heal from it, and what educators can do to help. DPSCD student facilitators were from Denby, Academy of the Americas, Cass Tech, Detroit School of Arts, Ben Carson, and Cody. Students showed leadership abilities, compassion, and sensitivities to these important discussions on race. Funding support for this year’s event came from PNC Bank and Macy's. |

Ja’Marcus Smith of Mumford High School made history as the first DPSCD athlete to win a state championship for wrestling! He is PSL's first-ever MHSAA state champion in the 103-weight division. |

The Kresge Foundation recently awarded $330,000 over 3 years for the establishment of a Health Hub at a DPSCD high school! This DPSCD community school model project grant will support the “whole child” and improve connections between students, their families, schools and, neighborhoods. Services covered by the grant will include health and mental health, referrals, and other wrap-around services including dental, hearing, and vision. These services will be available to high school students and their families, as well as all of the feeder school students!
We are so grateful for the Kresge Foundation’s continued support of the District. They have been strong supporters for many years and also helped to support the School at Marygrove!

Detroit Institute of Arts’ 85th DPSCD Student Exhibition this year will offer an in-person exhibition with a virtual component. Since 1937, this partnership has showcased and celebrated artwork produced by Detroit K-12 art students. DIA will display ~175 works this year, including paintings, prints, drawings, photography, ceramics, videos, and jewelry. DIA will offer a 3D version of the exhibit and produce video interviews with students that will accompany the works. The opening celebration takes place on April 23, 2022 and runs through May 29, 2022. Don’t miss it!

The Detroit Economic Club’s (DEC) Career Readiness Academy brings high school and DEC members together for mentoring sessions on career exploration, economics, personal brand, marketing yourself, networking and graduation. Approximately 20 or 30 Osborn or other school students were sponsored to attend the six-month program.
buildOn Detroit--2022 Service Learning is a year-long focus on our high school students, helping them to explore issues facing their communities and taking action through service. Youth are empowered to lead projects to address issues such as racism, homelessness, violence, and hunger. They’ll experience hands-on learning through exploration of societal issues, social-emotional development, and inside and outside classroom activities.

In 2016, there were just over 70 art programs District-wide. The Vitti administration has restored these important programs to over 300!

All K-12 students have at least one art offering at each school and multiple arts offerings are now in all high schools. Thanks to partners, these offerings occur during the school day, after school, and on weekends. These opportunities enrich the whole child, giving them more experiences for creative thought, expression, careers, and life-long learning.
