Dear LA Civil Rights Family,

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Today, as we celebrate with parades, shamrocks, and Irish traditions, we are reminded building a better Los Angeles requires more than just luck. It takes unity, resilience, and a collective effort to uplift every Angeleno. Together, we break barriers, build bridges, and honor the diverse backgrounds making our city stronger.

As we reflect on these values, we also celebrate Women’s History Month—a time to recognize the victories, leadership, and lasting impact of courageous, resilient, and resourceful women, who have shaped our history and continue paving the way for a brighter, more just future. Among those leading the change is Mayor Karen Bass, whose #LAStrong vision is driving our city forward. Throughout the month, we are highlighting incredible women, including our all-women senior staff and the dedicated members of our Commission on the Status of Women, whose unwavering commitment drives meaningful change in our city.

Last week, Mayor Karen Bass, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove, and our City Councilmembers joined LA Civil Rights and its Commission on the Status of Women for the Women of Impact Awards. This event celebrated 18 trailblazing women driving change in the fight for equity and justice. Read more about this event, recent community engagement, and upcoming celebrations below.

Join us as we invite you to uplift, advocate, and, of course, Just Say Hello—because the path to a Los Angeles for Everyone begins with a simple connection.

Keep the faith and keep the fight,

Capri Maddox, Esq.

Executive Director to Deliver Keynote at LACBA's Labor & Employment Symposium

LA Civil Rights’ Executive Director Capri Maddox is honored to deliver the keynote address at the Los Angeles County Bar Association (LACBA) Labor & Employment Law Section’s 45th Annual Symposium this Wednesday, March 19, 2025. She will highlight the importance of confronting hate and discrimination in all of its forms. She will also discuss the significance of CA Senate Bill 1340, championed by CA Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas, which expands authority to local agencies allowing for increased workplace discrimination protections.

LA Civil Rights addresses discrimination in the private sector areas of commerce, education, employment, and housing—through our Civil Rights Enforcement Unit, while also leading equitable initiatives to strengthen Los Angeles. We send a heartfelt thank you to the LACBA, the incredible 2024-2025 Labor & Employment Symposium Planning Committee, and its distinguished Chair, Julie Gutman Dickinson—a dear advocate of the LA Civil Rights Department—whose tireless efforts have made this event possible.

Civil Rights Enforcement: Call to Action

Last week, LA Civil Rights issued a press release encouraging Angelenos who may have experienced discrimination due to their Armenian heritage to file claims with our office. In just a few days, our Civil Rights Enforcement Investigators received over hundred reports suggesting possible discrimination in banking and financial services, particularly the closing or restriction of bank accounts based on national origin, especially for customers with last names ending in “-yan” or “-ian.”

"We need the community's help to fully understand the scope of this potential discrimination against the Armenian community in Los Angeles," said Capri Maddox. "If you, or someone you know, has had a bank account closed or restricted without a clear and legitimate explanation, and your last name ends in 'yan' or 'ian,' or you believe you were targeted due to your Armenian heritage, please contact us to file a civil rights claim with our department. Your experience can help us ensure equal access to financial services in Los Angeles."

If you believe you have been impacted or have relevant information for the investigation, please contact our team online at LAisForEveryone.com or call us at 213-978-1845. Translation services are available.

Weekend Recap

Women's History Month was in full swing at LA Civil Rights this weekend, starting with the Women of Impact Awards and continuing with Service Day LA, as part of our Together in Service campaign.

On Friday morning, we hosted the Women of Impact Awards, honoring 18 trailblazing women dedicating their lives to advancing gender equity in Los Angeles. Joined by Mayor Karen Bass, the City Council (a historic majority of women), and Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37), we celebrated these inspiring leaders with a special breakfast and City Council presentation.

Later, Executive Director Maddox joined Commissioner Erma Bernard-Gibson of our Commission on the Status of Women for a panel discussion at the LA5 Rotary Club, LA’s leading business and civic organization since 1909, to discuss their shared commitment to promoting women’s welfare and equal participation in city government.

This past Saturday, Mayor Bass, Councilmember Curren Price, Assemblymember Sade Elhawary (AD-57), and Board of Public Works Commissioner Steve Kang joined numerous community organizations and dedicated residents for a community cleanup as part of our Together in Service campaign, a collective partnership honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy through community action.
