Join us as Canada Walks for Bladder Cancer!
|
|
Registration is now open for the 2021 Bladder Cancer Canada Awareness Walk. Like last year, our walk is virtual. Presented by Ferring Canada, Canada Walks for Bladder Cancer will take place during the weekend of September 25-26, 2021.
Every small step you take goes a long way in creating public awareness around the fifth most common cancer in Canada that is seriously underfunded. Your participation helps us raise funds for research and provide support to our patients and their caregivers.

Canadians helping Canadians (Volunteer Feature)
|
|
Our walk site at www.bccwalk.ca launched on Monday, June 14 and much of it is thanks to Randy, our IT volunteer, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes of the website to get things ready. Randy also helps with the maintenance and improvements to the www.bladdercancercanada.org website. This site helps thousands of bladder cancer patients and their caregivers each year by providing helpful information, downloadable patient guidebooks, online support groups, a discussion forum and much more.
Randy, a fellow bladder cancer patient, and his wife and caregiver, Ruby, also a Bladder Cancer Canada volunteer, are perfect examples of how Canadians help one another through some of the most difficult times in their lives. We have so much gratitude for both Randy and Ruby, and their dedication and commitment to bladder cancer patients across the country.
Here’s Randy’s story, as shared by Ruby:
|
|
“Randy was diagnosed in June of 2017 with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer and underwent his first TURBT surgery in July 2017. Since then, he’s had a total of 10 cystoscopy’s, 8 TURBT surgeries, major surgery in March of 2020 to remove his left kidney & ureter, 18 BCG treatments and is ready for 3 maintenance BCG treatments beginning on June 18, 2021. Randy is so grateful for BCC and all the resources and programs offered. The BCC support group has been a great resource. As we chose our flowers this year, we had Bladder Cancer Canada in mind. If you see red see your doctor!” Ruby (Caregiver to Randy and BCC volunteer) and Randy (Bladder cancer patient and BCC volunteer)

Canadian bladder cancer research pushes
forward despite Covid-19
|
|
The COVID-19 pandemic may have disrupted medical care and research in many ways, but a recent meeting of Canadian bladder cancer experts earlier this spring made it clear that Canadian doctors and people with bladder cancer are continuing to make substantial contributions to our understanding of this disease.
In February 2021, a group of healthcare professionals and patient advocates from Bladder Cancer Canada met virtually at the 2021 Canadian Bladder Cancer Forum (CBCF). This two-day meeting focused on ongoing and upcoming bladder cancer research in Canada.

A summary of the report as well as video presentations from our board chair, Ferg Devins, and members of our Medical Advisory and Research Boards are available on our website here.

Representation matters – have your voice heard.

We are currently looking for members from the LGBQT+ community to volunteer with our organization and our progressive board of directors. No direct experience with bladder cancer is required for this exciting opportunity where we are working towards creating a world where bladder cancer is just a memory. Legal, financial or fundraising experience would definitely be an asset, as would residents from either British Columbia or the Atlantic provinces.

Share Your Story – Virtual Advisory Board Meeting Call for Volunteers
|
|
We are pleased to further our relationship with Ferring International. Together, we will be hosting a virtual advisory board meeting for Canadians living with Non-Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer (NMIBC) and those involved in their care.
We are currently looking for volunteers to participate, and in particular:
· Those who may have undergone a radical cystectomy
· Those who may be BCG-unresponsive
The purpose of this meeting is to:
· Gain a better understanding of the NMIBC journey from symptom onset to diagnosis, through treatment and beyond
· Learn how to further support the NMIBC community
Interested in participating? If you are comfortable sharing your story in front of others, about the impact NMIBC has had on your life, please email michelez@bladdercancercanada.org for more information! We appreciate your consideration in advance.
