The league of women voters is a nonpartisan, grassroots nonprofit dedicated to empowering everyone to fully participate in our democracy.

Get To Know Your League!

We are delighted to announce the launch of a monthly Sarasota Leaders Update Call to which all members are invited! Each month our committee chairs and team leaders will share their group's accomplishments and describe their ongoing activities.

The purpose of this call will be three-fold:

  • To enhance communication and foster transparency across all our chapter activities.
  • Update leaders so they can work together whenever possible.
  • Inform our members so they too can be "insiders"; more knowledgable about League activities and opportunities for involvement.

We will host this Zoom call on the fourth Monday of each month from

4-5 pm starting this Monday, July 28th! Since this is a members-only event, login to our website to see this event on our calendar and to register or click on the button below.

See you there!

Concerning the Constitution:

Local Effects of National Change

The first in a series of Hot Topic Luncheon Panel Discussions

Three Sarasota County experts will help us understand the real life implications of our constitutional crisis, followed by Q&A.

The new LWV Federal Judiciary position states that, "...within the bounds of the US Constitution, the overarching principles of transparency, accountability, independence, and ethics are essential to an effective federal judiciary."

The Federal Judiciary position was adopted using the long-standing League practice of grassroots study to arrive at member understanding and agreement.

321 Leagues representing 45 states and the District of Columbia participated in the study.  Read the full text here.

Abrego Garcia Case Underscores Issue of Due Process

Posted Tuesday, July 3, 2025

by Vilia Johnson and Rhonda Peters

The founders of our nation included in the Constitution the command that “No person shall…be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.”

In the past 236 years, Americans of all political beliefs have rightly expressed pride in our Constitution. All have agreed that the government cannot just invade people’s homes without a warrant, or arrest and imprison people without recourse to judicial oversight. That appeared to be universal, conventional wisdom among all Americans, at least until the past several months. Read more...

Tell your senators to oppose the SAVE Act

The House and Senate introduced the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require citizenship documentation to register to vote even though voters in every state are already required to affirm or verify their citizenship status when registering. The House has already passed it. But we can still stop it from passing in the Senate!

What We're Reading

Nancy Morrison, communication co-chair highly recommends

A Fever in the Heartland

This well written and thoroughly researched work of non-fiction made me realize what is happening today is a continuation of another dark period in our nation's history. I learned that the Klan was largely responsible for the passage of the Immigration Act of 1924, which aimed to restrict immigration, particularly from Southern and Eastern Europe .

We invite you to send your book or film recommendations to comms@lwvsrq.org with a brief writeup.

The LWVSRQ Board now meets on the first Tuesday of every month.
