DEFEND DEMOCRACY IN SARASOTA COUNTY - BECOME A POLL WORKER!

Poll workers are essential to safe, free, and fair elections.

According to the Sarasota County Supervisor of Election’s website, “Poll workers are critical to the success of every election. These nonpartisan workers help in many ways, including processing vote-by-mail ballots, managing in-person early voting and working election day polling locations.”

Since 2020, the League of Women Voters has partnered with Power the Polls encouraging our supporters to become poll workers.

Many of our chapter members have “worked the polls”. Their experiences have been positive and rewarding.

Its enlightening and personally rewarding, experiencing first-hand, the security of our elections and the dedication of my co-workers to ensuring that all eligible voters get a fair opportunity to cast their ballots.”

Tracy (poll worker since 2018)

I became a US citizen in 2023 and for the first time entered American political life as a poll worker. The experience confirmed for me the vital importance of a free and fair voting system. My role also left me with faith in the security and unbiased management of the elections. Making a small contribution to the American democratic process was both exhilarating and educational.”

Brenda (poll worker since 2024)

I encourage League members to become poll workers. It's a great hands-on way to serve our community and defend our democracy!

Ann (poll worker since 2008)

Please consider becoming a poll worker for the upcoming mid-term primary and general elections.

Training is provided. The rewards are boundless!

Support for Women's Equity Declining

The Venice Gondolier - August 9, 2025

Recently, momentum has slowed, and we wonder whether the influence of organizations such as AAUW and the League can continue in the current political environment. Will support for women’s independence continue through the 21st century?

Reproductive Healthcare: Essential to a Functioning Democracy

The Bradenton Times -August 17, 2025

Despite these advances, full equality and economic opportunity for women will only come when voters demand that policies keep pace with women’s roles in society and ensure their freedom to make their own personal reproductive healthcare decisions, free of government intrusion.

SAVE Act Threatens 105 Years of Women’s Equality

The Sarasota Herald Leader -

August 24, 2025

From Seneca Falls in 1848 to the 19th Amendment in 1920, women’s suffrage represents a hard-won journey toward equality. Today, that legacy is at risk due to legislation already passed by the U.S. House of Representatives and awaiting action in the Senate, legislation premised on scant evidence of voter fraud.

Simply put, the SAVE Act will make it harder for the average American citizen to vote. Read more...

League of Women Voters of Florida and LULAC Secure Narrow Preliminary Injunction in Ballot Initiative Case

July 10, 2025 - “Across the country, anti-voter legislatures are targeting ballot initiative processes and the pro-democracy groups that engage in them,” said Marcia Johnson, chief counsel of the League of Women Voters of the United States. “The League is proud to fight for access to direct democracy in Florida, and we celebrate this win. We know there is more to do to ensure that Florida voters can have a real voice in their state, and you can count on the League to always fight for voters.”

League of Women Voters of Tarrant County, LULAC, and Partner Groups to Challenge Discriminatory Tarrant County Redistricting

August 14, 2025 - The lawsuit filed today asserts: (1) this secretive rushed process violated the Texas Open Meetings Act; (2) County Judge O’Hare and the majority of the Commissioners Court violated the Texas Constitution by failing to consider the convenience of the people in redistricting; (3) the redistricting violates Texas anti-discrimination laws by burdening the right to vote of Black and Latino voters; and (4) it was done with racially discriminatory purpose in violation of the Texas Constitution.  Read more...
