Our Future is on the Ballot

Primary elections determine which candidates advance to the General Election. The candidates we vote into office make decisions that affect us, our families, and our community.

Primary voter turnout is crucial to prevent a small, highly partisan fraction of voters from determining the future of Sarasota County, Florida, and our country.

August 18 also determines the outcome of the School Board contest. All voters can vote in that critical race.

For the August election, LWVSRQ will conduct candidate forums for the open seats for County Commission and School Board. We’re counting on you to spread the word.

Candidate forums offer a rare opportunity to see politicians step away from soundbites and campaign ads. By placing candidates’ side-by-side to answer identical, unscripted questions, voters get a chance to gauge temperament, position on and knowledge of the issues and evaluate their qualifications for office.

Candidate forums help voters make confident, informed choices.

Our partner for the forums is Suncoast Searchlight, a nonprofit news organization whose mission is to produce investigative and explanatory journalism that serves and empowers the residents of Florida’s Suncoast region.

The forums will be held in person, live-streamed and recorded for viewing on our website. As a League supporter, we ask you to attend, invite your friends and neighbors and share the links to the recordings. You’ll find the information you need in this newsletter.

Please consider joining our Voter Registration Assistance Team. It just may be the most gratifying thing you do this year. See our call for volunteers below.

Voting Rights Groups Will Appeal Ruling on DeSantis’ Partisan Map

Press Release / Last Updated: May 26, 2026

TALLAHASSEE — Voting rights groups will challenge Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ overtly partisan congressional map all the way to the Florida Supreme Court, if necessary, after a circuit court judge declined to stop implementation of new districts in advance of the 2026 midterms.

The League of Women Voters of Florida (LWVFL), Common Cause, and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), represented by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), Southern Coalition for Social Justice (SCSJ), and Democracy Defenders Fund, have sued to get the recently passed, overtly partisan congressional map thrown out. Today, a circuit court judge declined to stop the new map from going into effect before this year’s elections. Read more...

“When I joined the League and thought about how I could contribute, the Speakers Bureau quickly came to mind. Public speaking was something that began in high school when I joined the debate team and competed in speech competitions.

It continued when I taught Psychology and Special Education after graduate school and later as a state legislator in Massachusetts.
