The Story and Progress of Yellamabanda School in Hyderabad, India

Carnevali Foundation sends a monthly email to share stories and highlights about the focus of our philanthropic endeavors. This work is both exciting and rewarding as we consider our achievements and future challenges.

The Hyderabad government moved 1000 homeless families to small dwellings in an open space on the outskirts of Hyderabad, India, in 2003. These homes (in the background) consisted of one room with a door and window. Also shown in the photo is the first Yellamabanda school, housed under the grass tarp. With temperatures ranging from 80Β°-110Β°F (26Β°-43Β° C) year round, the children and teacher move to find comfort in the shade. Read more below about the transformation of this school.

Perimeter Wall Built

In 2004, Carnevali Foundation made an agreement with the local education office to build and support our first government primary school. A wall was built to define our school yard footprint. Our Foundation President (formerly a preschool teacher) joined the children for a game of 'duck, duck, goose.'

Expanding Neighborhood

When the first Yellamabanda school building was constructed, it was exciting to see an immediate increase in student attendance. The photo above shows the beginning of our third building under construction lead to neighborhood expansion.

Kitchen Building Added

High School students gathered for an exam prep session outside in uniforms provided by the government education office. In the background, a kitchen building was installed for food preparation, including sinks for drinking and hand washing. An RO system enclosure and library were built just behind the kitchen.

Thriving Students

There are upwards of 1,000 students attending the Yellamabanda School. It is overcrowded and despite many efforts Carnevali Foundation has not been successful in finding adequate space for building a new school. However, Yellamabanda students continue to thrive!
